Food/Weaning Help!

Hi all!

I haven't posted here in a long time, but I am in serious need of help with my baby's eating. She just turned 1 on Saturday. Up until today, she was nursing first thing in the morning, then would have 3 bottles of formula throughout the day (1pm, 4:30pm, and bedtime). We have always struggled with solids. She hardly eats anything - she does eat one big bowl of oatmeal every morning. She also will eat some frozen veggies, cheerios, and baby food pouches.

Anyway, we had her 1 year today and our Dr said to completely stop formula and bottles starting today (but I can keep nursing). She was concerned that she still isn't eating very many solids (she's also in the 5% weight, so she's small). Needless to say, that didn't go well. DD fussed all evening, barely ate any food, screamed bloody murder when I tried to give her cow's milk, so I finally gave up and gave her a bottle of formula.

Sorry this is SO long! But any advice on what to do? The concern is definitely more of her not wanting regular food, more so than not using a sippy cup. The Dr. doesn't think she will want to eat regular food while she still has the option of formula.

Please give any advice you can think of! I'm desperate! Thanks so much!!!!

  • Thanks...I have already been thinking of switching drs. This just seems way too drastic and I usually favor a more baby led approach. Thanks for the input!

We are also struggling a bit with solids. It's stressful! LO just prefers to nurse ( she is ebf & never took a bottle). We got kind of the same speech at her one year appt. I need to limit time at the boob so she gets hungry enough for solids. I feel like solids are just clicking for her this week! She is willing to try foods at least but we are still ways away from 3 meals a day. She does much better offering bites here and there. We will keep working towards 3 good meals. I am trying to space nursing a little more but I am not going to limit her. Honestly if she took formula I would being giving that to her as well just so she could get extra calories! Just keep offering ! It's a slow transition.

  • Yeah mine isn't doing well with the solids thing either but she's ok with cows milk...my doctor had said to slowly transition mixing the formula and cows milk, especially if she's used to warm formula. I also mentioned that mine will eat baby food still just is being difficult with solids and the doctor said to offer what we're eating but then like top her off with baby food.

Also, just so you know, my doctor said her stomach is still only about as big as her fist so what she needs is less...that helped me feel a little better in regards to quantity of food she'll eat! Hope it improves soon!

  • I would never stop breastmilk or formula cold turkey for cows milk or anything else. That's a huge change for your little one. We transitioned Ds1 same as previously suggested - 1oz at a time. One day do 1oz cows milk, 4oz breast/formula. Second/third day try 2oz to 3oz, etc. We will do the same with Ds2 once I get through most of my freezer stash.

As for food, my kids got bored with purees. Ds2 eats: cut up turkey burgers, diced chunk cheese, diced fruits and veggies, cheerios, and pretty much everything we eat - just cut up. This morning we had whole wheat french toast with a thin layer of real maple syrup. He ate the whole piece! I made mini blueberry muffins last week and those were a hit.

We also do occasional pb&j, grilled cheese and mac and cheese. I have a three year old too. I just try to make everything as healthy as possible.
