Re: BFing & pumping

  • I pump in the morning after he nurses and usually get about 3-4 ounces. I sometimes also do the same in the evening or let DH give him a bottle so I can pump. It seems counter-productive but I can usually pump about 2 ounces more than what he eats. It's a slow process but it seems to work for us.

  • I'm not pumping to build a stash so much as to have enough on hand to bottle feed when he refuses to nurse. I pump after most nursing sessions (not overnight, but always first thing in the morning), so it's 20-30 min nursing, then 10-30 min pumping (usually 20).

  • I started pumping last week once in the morning and once in the evening. 10-15 min at a time. But lo started into a growth spurt and I couldn't get her content long enough to pump so I quit. I'll be back at it soon.

Yea, I guess this is me too. Not a stash per se, but a little in the fridge/freezer so I can be away from her for more than an hour and a half!

I'm just finding it challenging to work in a pump session if she's awake

  • He usually sleeps after a feeding, so I put him down and pump. You might also try hand expressing, on its own our after pumping. I don't get much, but some women get much more than they do when pumping. And you may have more milk early in the morning than other times during the day, so you might be able to get away with fewer pump sessions if you take advantage of that.

  • Overnight I pump and give bottles.  I pump more than she will eat (about two typical feedings).  Then I also pump about an hour after her morning feeding.  And while she's napping during the day I try to do a power pump (on/off/on every 10 minutes for an hour or 2) to keep my supply up.

  • She usually sleeps really well after her late morning feeding so I pump then. It's typically around 10:30 or 11:00 by then. I'm trying to move that back so my body will be used to pumping at my lunchtime when I'm back to work FT. I pump about an hour after she's done eating.

  • I'm pumping once a day whenever I can. Sometimes that's in the morning, sometimes the afternoon and other times it's after she is in bed for the night. I pump 30-60 minutes after she has fed
  • I've been pumping after the middle of the night feeding. She's only been nursing one side lately at this feeding so I was nursing then pumping. That was taking forever so then I decided to pump and then give a bottle, which I pump more than she'll eat so still allowed me to save some. But I missed nursing her, so the last two nights I've nursed her while pumping the other side. This has worked for us. I also pump here and there during the day if I need to, especially after a feeding where she only nurses one side or if I can tell she didn't really empty them.

  • Renny only likes the left boob so I just started pumping the right while he is eating. Since I have supply issues, I only get 1-2 oz now, but hope my supply picks up soon.

  • I normally pump one side when he takes a long nap so the other side is ready for him when he wakes up. I also pump after he goes to bed at night. My goal is to get 5 oz during the day that I can freeze (the pumping before bed is for a bottle overnight) so I will have around 200 oz in the freezer when I go back to the office.

  • I was pumping a lot because of shields. Now that I don't use them, I pump 1-2 times a day saving 4-7 oz. I have 300 oz in the freezer. I was worried id go into oversupply soon

I nurse all night and most of the day if I'm home and he gets pumped bottles when we are away from home or if my DH is feeding him. I pump four times a day after LO has nursed and get anywhere from 20-25 total ounces. I'm trying to build a large supply for when I go back to work.

  • DS typically only eats from one side at a time so I pump the other side after his second morning feeding.
