what is your activity level like?

Aside from feedings, diaper changes, and any routine activities of baby maintenance, what is your activity level like?

LO will be a month old tomorrow, and I still feel like I'm doing next to nothing.  Most days, I take care of her and if I'm lucky, fold some laundry, respond to an email or two, or empty the dishwasher. A particularly productive day will see me actually making a meal or two, folding and putting away laundry, and maybe even grocery shopping.  And I try to take LO out for a walk a few times a week.

I'm used to doing a lot, so I'm a little frustrated at times by the limits of my time and energy, but I feel like we're doing okay as a family and as a household.

I'm curious as to what your experiences with activity level has been like.  For the last two weeks, my midwife has told me that I'm doing too much.. but I feel like I'm hardly doing anything.

  • Same here. On a good day we run one errand and I get at least one chore done. Most days I just take care of LO and shower and eat.

  • I forgot showering and eating!  I have made the very basics of self-care mandatory, so I'm definitely eating, staying hydrated, and bathing daily.

  • I am a month PP and don't do much on a regular day, but now it's mostly due to sleep deprivation or my LO not being able to be put down. I just took a trip to the aquarium with family and I spend at least 4-5 hours a week working on my college class. I have been trying to take a walk each day this week and only failed when I was busy entertainig company. Next week I plan to baby carry and walk on the treadmill each day. I have just recently started to care about the cleanliness of our house and will get back to my normal cleaning schedule this weekend.

  • I think I did too much and it's coming back to me now :/ little one will be 1 month on Sunday and I've been cleaning making lunch, dinner, laundry moping while she naps I guess I just wanted to feel useful but for the past two days my body aches all the time....taking a break now.
  • I do next to nothing. Still haven't driven though go on short walks like 4x per week. I shower clean kitchen and direct DH and any guests to help with laundry and other chores.

  • I think I'm pretty active. I had 2nd degree tear and over did it in the beg and ended up in extra pain for it. Now at over 5 weeks I do basic house hold chores and run errands, go to the lactation support group, visit people. I can't stay in the house all day. I do have a good sleeper that is rarely cranky and I have felt back to normal so running around isn't too difficult for us.
  • All of the above! Some days I get a ton done, and other days we stay in bed and barely make meals. It all depends on sleep for this mama. I usually physically feel upto doing anything but it's a matter of fitting it in with lo bf schedule or lack there of. Lo is 5 weeks. I did just start back into couch to 5k last week. Sloooowly.
  • It's funny - I was so proud of myself yesterday bc I managed to do all our laundry, clean the kitchen, put away clean clothes, take DD to the doctor, & go to target. That was a crapton of stuff to do, yet only about 1/3 of my former normal.

She's 4 weeks today, and some days have consisted of us doing nearly nothing, others have been sort of productive. If I get down on myself for not doing enough, my H just reminds me that I'm busy sustaining another life :)

  • It was funny because I was talking to a friend who doesn't have a child and said "We had such a busy day! I took a shower and gave Renny a bath AND went for a walk!" There was dead air before my friend realized that was it...

I do try to get a good 1/2hr walk in everyday. Especially now that I found a DD and Panera within walking distance. But getting a load of laundry done, dishes washed, some emails answered, and light housework (cleaning the floor, vacuuming, dusting) on top of caring for LO and myself is a super productive day.

  • I'm doing next to nothing. I manage to shower every other day and I eat at least once a day. I'm still recovering from nearly bleeding to death, so I don't get much done other than sleeping and caring for LO.

  • I try to get dishes and bottles washed every day, while also doing a load of laundry and folding clothes/ putting them away. I straighten up a tiny bit too. If I'm lucky I'll get a shower in while H is at work.
I feel very accomplished over the smallest of tasks getting done.
  • Ugh. This is one of my biggest struggles! It drives me nuts to have to house messy (not dirty just disorganized) but lately LO won't let me out her down. It's gotten to the point where I feel accomplished if I get dinner cooked and clean up after it all in the same evening. Thankfully we got a baby Ka'tan that came in the mail Wednesday so I'm going to start doing some serious baby wearing and getting more done
  • Baby wearing FTW! Wearing LO has been the only way I get anything done since he has been super clingy recently

  • Some days I feel very productive getting an errand, cooking and cleaning done (in addition to showering)...somedays I'm lucky to throw something into the crockpot and shower. The days I 'get things done' I am so exhausted by night. And echoing pp it's like 1/4 of what I would have accomplished pre-baby. I feel like the house is slowly falling apart around me!
I just finally pulled my moby out of the closet yesterday. I don't know what I was waiting on - LO loves it! Fell right asleep yesterday.
  • I don't get much done between taking care of both kids.  DD1 is getting over a horrible chest cold which she lovingly gave to her 5 wk old sister so I have spent the last week taking care of sick kids.  BTW having a sick 5 wk old is STRESSFUL!!  Before that H and I were sick.

On an average day, I don't get much done except a load of laundry,(which never gets put away, we live out of clothes baskets), cook dinner and straighten the kitchen at night (dishes, bottles ect).  Depending on how much sleep I have the night before I will do some chores around the house such as dusting, vacuuming, bathrooms.  I hate that I'm not more productive but my kids are my priority and once DD2 is sleeping through the night I will get more done.

  • Here I was feeling horrible. I'm lucky if I get a shower since it seems as soon as I think I can take one, she wakes up from a nap, or cries after contentedly sitting in her vibrating chair (I don't know what it's called-bouncer?). I don't get naps during the day since that's the only time I can do anything besides sit my ass on the couch with her.

I have gone to the grocery store and gone on errands but that isn't every day. We started walking when DH got home yesterday. He wants to walk every day which is good.

I feel bad because I got so worn out yesterday from walking not very far from our house. And now that we can DTD I don't know where I have time for that. DH gets home at 6p. We eat dinner and I feed DD. I start getting DD ready for bed around 830p to get her to sleep by 10p. (Change to PJs, feed her, rock her to sleep). After that I'm so tired and my back hurts and that's our normal bedtime anyway that I don't want to DTD. DH suggested getting DD up earlier (she sleeps to 5am now) and to bed earlier so we can have some time together, but he doesn't realize that would mean I have to get up earlier and go to bed earlier, too, so would not work for us to have time together.

    :( Pity party here

  • I feel like I get nothing done.  It is so time consuming taking care of a little baby!  I seem to manage to get laundry done, but I have not been able to take care of general house cleaning like vacuuming.  I generally shower everyday, however there has been a couple of occasions where it just never happened.  I should probably eat and drink more throughout the day also, but I'm working on that.  There are definitely days where I get more accomplished than others.  I'm hoping as the weeks go on, things improve.
  • I have good days and bad days. A bad day would be doing maybe one chore around the house. A good day is going to visit friends, showering, cleaning up the house, or maybe running an errand. We also take a daily walk with MH in the evenings when he gets home. A lot of times my activity level depends on how much pain I am in.

  • Your activity level sounds like mine. Some days I sit and watch TV and cuddle LO (he is fussy often, watching for colic) and some days he will sleep and I will clean the house or hang clothes. Yesterday I got lucky and had time to mop the floor! I only leave the house about twice a week, usually to go grocery shopping.

  • It fluctuates daily, I thought I was doing well at getting everything done until I realized fiance doesn't have any clean work shirts. I must be slacking on laundry! I personally would rather wait on chores and take DD out of the house to run errands instead. I feel so much better when we get out of the house and we've been getting out a couple times a week. I usually do chores when fiance gets home and can help with DD. We also get out one day on the weekend to go to our parents as a family and we take a walk or get groceries/etc the other day, I think we're doing well considering we have a 5 week old!
  • For BTDT, does it get easier as the baby gets older, or harder? As far as the theme of this thread in getting things done around the house and not being chained to the couch due to BF'ing, etc.

  • My DD is 3 weeks old and my activity level I pretty much the same as before baby. She sleeps 2-3 hours then an hour and a half of awake time and then down for 2-3 hours again . So I pretty much have 6 hours to myself during the day. I clean, cook, shower, run errands with LO , study for a work certification etc.
  • At 2 weeks pp, I've managed to keep up with laundry, dishes, caring for three dogs, and every other day I shower when DH gets home. I've also managed to go grocery shopping, and did some Christmas shopping this week. DD is a good sleeper *so far* and I'm not the type to be able to sit still. I only had a superficial tear, so that probably plays into how in able to do so much. Next step is to add in a daily walk.
  • I was the same way with DD1. I was really beat up after her birth and couldn't run until 6w PP even though I ran until the day before going into labor with her. I definitely overdid it at first and I hated it! I was so used to doing a million things everyday and it was a hard adjustment. With DD2, I'm already used to putting myself second so the transition was much easier! And her birth was sooo much easier and less traumatic down there so I was back to running by 2w PP. I plan on running 5 miles today at 6w PP, which makes me uber-happy! I have no advice for feeling like you are at the mercy of your LO and being confined to doing less each day because, well, that's just how it is. Like I said, I really struggled with it with DD1. One thing I did was to limit myself to trying to accomplish two things each day, not 10. That made me feel good because I was still getting something done but not overwhelming myself. GL!
