Yesterday afternoon DS was BF. I had just taken him off my shoulder after burping him and was helping him latch on to breast #2 when all Hell broke loose. We found out later that's due to reflux, he vomited, at the same time I let down and he swallowed down the wrong pipe. He immediately started choking but could not cough. His lips turned blue and went limp. I yelled for DH to call 911 while I flipped him on to his side and attempted to clear his airway. He vomited once and started to breathe again but it was very labored. I did a few chest compressions and he vomited again, but this time his neck jerked and he cried out in pain. He continued to vomit until the rescue squad got there a few minutes later and he began to cry and scream. The paramedics were able to hear his lungs and cleared him. He was still very obviously in pain in his neck and was not as alert as we were used to so we elected for then to take us to the ER. I rode in the back, laying on the stretcher, holding my baby on my chest the whole way and he fell asleep. When we got to the hospital, the ER doc contacted our pediatrician and everyone, said we did the right thing and no one made us feel like paranoid first time parents. They monitored his stats for about an hour and cleared him to go home, though the pediatrician said she'd admit him for the night and keep him monitored if we chose. We declined as his stats all were normal and we had a follow up with the pediatrician already scheduled for the next day. We didn't sleep at all, we were up with every noise. His pediatrician diagnosed him with reflux and put him on meds. She also agreed that he had some pain in his neck and ordered an xray. Yeah, having to hold your 19 day old baby down during an X-Ray is not a pleasant experience. We went and picked up his meds from the pharmacy and waited anxiously by the phone for the results for his X-ray. At 4:30, the doctor called to tell us his X-Ray was clear, just a muscle spasm and he had gained 10 oz. from the previous week. She said we did exactly what we are supposed to and LO was doing superb and she would see us at his 2 month appointment. What a relief after a scary couple of days!
