Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Relux & night feedings

My son will wake up to eat around 2 - 3 times a night. It is sooo hard because after every bottle I hold him in an upright position for 30 - 40 minutes. Thats not a problem during the day but doing that 12, 3, 5 in the morning has me loosing my mind. One bottle keeps me up about an hour. Anyone else? Not complaining because I would still wake him up even if he didn't because he is not gaining much weight but I just want to know how the other moms are holding up with their babies and reflux.

Re: Relux & night feedings

  • DS is 7 1/2 weeks now and only wakes up once at night and then starts his day at 5:30 a.m.  His MOTN feeding also takes at least an hour then I stay up and pump.  However, when he was younger he woke up every two hours and I had to do exactly what you're doing.  "This too shall pass."  Just hang in there.  The sleep deprivation is hard - but you can do it!  How old is your LO?

  • Have you tried having him sleep in a rock n play?
  • Same here. I feed, burp and hold him up. I have tilted his co-sleeper on an incline and that has allowed me to put him back down after 10 minutes or so. I really hope that the reflux will improve soon!

On the other hand- my first son, without reflux wouldn't settle after feedings for over and hour and I would have to walk him around, bounce him and sing..it was way more exhausting!

  • Sequoiasky my first 2 boys were the same but I guess I feel more stressed with this one
  • Carnation77 he is 6 wks old and yes I keep thinking it will pass soon. I look at my 2 oldest and think that time did pass quickly and now they are 6 & 8. Has your babys reflux decreased now at 7 wks?
  • Yes, the reflux has decreased somewhat.  Some days are worse than others.  He's not too bad at night because he doesn't tend to eat as much MOTN.  He's the worst in the morning so I've slowed down his feeding.  I make him take a break halfway through for about 15 minutes before restarting and that seems to help.  I also discovered he's allergic to milk and sleep him in a rock n play.

Does your son spit up? I'm just curious because DD2 is a happy spitter. She will have decent days where she doesn't spit up all that much and then she will have days like yesterday and today where the volume of spit up is ridiculous. I'm so tired of being spit up on. For us it doesn't seem to be getting better. DD will be 12 weeks on Saturday.

  • Does he spit up?  Yes. He also projectile vomits.  In fact, I just cleaned our wood floors yesterday to get all the spatter marks off!  He is NOT a happy spitter.  He wakes up with a scrunched up face screaming in pain. I'm actually kind of used to the spit up now.  I constantly have vomit on me.  I'm sure I stink.  And I have large prefold diapers everywhere I lay him down because they're easy to wash if he "leaks" some puke.  But like I said - it's actually gotten better.  He used to spit up all down the front of me several times a day (he had great aim for my cleavage) and now he just gets a little on my shoulder and where he lays down.  And he's generally a happier baby and is crying less now than he used to.  I'm just waiting for his esophagus to complete developing.  I'm hoping it will get better then although DH told me he guzzled malox in elementary school so it's not looking promising.
  • It is the same here. I know it stinks right now and feels overwhelming, but it won't last forever. I keep my Kindle by DD's rocking chair and read during that 30-40 min time frame. Or, I snooze too. :)

  • Carnation77 and SummerBabyLove are your babies gaining weight? My son weighed 8.7oz and six weeks later he is at 8.15oz.
  • My LO is 6 wks and has severe reflux. We have 3- 4 feedings a night and they take an hr at least each time. It sucks, I'm tired but whatever I can do to help! We have tried the swing... Doesn't work as well now he's bigger. And we have a RnP but it's not inclined enough to set him in until we hit the timeline (at LEAST 30 min)

DD is continuing to gain weight although it's slow. Pedi isn't concerned yet but I don't like seeing her weight continue to drop in percentile for the growth chart. She was born 6.7lbs and at her 2 month checkup (she was 10 weeks) she was 10.6lbs.

Carnation, I feel like I will never get used to the spit up. The more she moves and sits up right the more she spits up. I can't even imagine what it will be like once she sits up on her own and becomes mobile. I am hoping things start to improve by then.

Yes, my baby is gaining weight.  He was 8 lbs when he was born.  He gained about 5 oz at his 3 week appointment (we couldn't get in for 2 weeks due to insurance issues) and I weighed him last weekend and he's over 12 lbs.  He's EBF and feeds every two hours.  So the reflux isn't holding him back, just making him (and me) miserable sometimes.  I figure everything gets better with time- we just have to be patient.  Some parents have much bigger health problems with their babies so I'm grateful I have a healthy little boy with a small reflux problem.  I hope everyone else going through this sees some relief soon.  Like I said - it is much better than it was.
  • My son had reflux for a while (7 1/2 mo.) and would eat 2-3 times during the night.  My heart goes out to you with the sleep deprivation, constant holding upright and mind-blowing amounts of spit up.  Frankly, I would hold him for about a half hour for the first couple months but then caught onto the fact that he would always sleep better in a swing.  So, I would shorten my holding time to 10 minutes and then transfer him to the swing for the rest of the night.
