Miscarriage/Pregnancy Loss

Exercise/Running after loss

Did anyone's doctor give them a timeline for exercise after your loss? I had a d & c (at 11 weeks) last Friday and have not exercised since. I was very active both before and during my pregnancy. My doctor said I could return to normal after the weekend, but I am nervous my bleeding will increase.  I need the mood boost given from boot camp/running, but don't want to rush things. Any advice? Opinions?

Re: Exercise/Running after loss

  • I am on the same boat.  I was an athlete before pregnancy (but decided to quit as soon as we decided to do TTC).  I ran during the pregnancy too.  I was wondering the same thing as I could pick up some runner high/endorphins to combat the constant blues, near depression state that I am in right now.

In my case, I was advised to rest for the next 2 - 3 days.  Once I meet my dr, I will ask if it's ok.   Maybe just run the tempo/easy pace run?  I know for me, I plan to start slow instead of going back to pre-pregnancy level.

  • I had my d & c yesterday and asked the dr this am when I can start running again. She said to take it easy (go for a walk) the next 2-3 days and very gradually start again over the next 2 weeks. I also ran before and during my pregnancy - only slowing down my pace.

If you feel good, try going for a short run and a slow pace and then take it from there. I plan to take off a few days and then gradually get back into the swing of things. I generally start going stir crazy if I don't run for a few days, so we'll see how this goes . . .

  • I ran the day after my d&c. I ran a marathon 3 weeks after.
  • After my D&C, my midwife and my surgeon told me I could run as soon as I felt ready.  I went for a run the day after my D&C (only 3 miles) then didn't work out the next two days (I was travelling).  Looking at my training log, I resumed my strength training and running regimen thereafter running 6+ miles.  I had no complications from my D&C.

  • Thanks for the answers. I am feeling good (no complications so far, but still bleeding), so I am going to do a short run tomorrow and hopefully get back up to speed in the next week or so.
  • My dr said that I could start exercising as soon as felt up to it.  I started while I was still bleeding.  Just take it easy and listen to your body.  Good luck! :-)
