Need input on tantrums.

Is anyone else dealing with major tantrums? Ds will be fine one minute and then the next, he's throwing his body around and screaming. I had no idea that the tantrums would start so early.

Things he does, during a tantrum:
Stiffens body
Bangs head on everything!
Screams
Cries
Doesn't want to be cuddled or soothed at all!
Scoots his body across the whole room

What do you do in these tantrums?

Re: Need input on tantrums.

  • Ignore it. DS mostly throws his tantrums at the dinner table.  Last night I actually pushed his high chair away from the table and DH and I continued to chat and eat, then as soon as he stopped I praised him and brought him back.

  • That's a good idea for dinner table. DS looks right at me after a stern no when he throws his food on the ground and slowly picks up more food and drops it on the floor. His eyes never leave mine. I feel like he us testing me and I have no idea what to do at this age! I will try that and see.
  • Lol @AmySmolos, DS does that eye contact thing too! It is so openly defiant that it almost makes me laugh coming from a 1 year old, then I remember that it is not going to be cute at all coming from a big kid. I just keep telling my self that limit testing is a normal part of development. And I drink. :P

  • DD does all that plus if we tell her not to do something she takes both hands and starts hitting herself on the head and yelling....OMG. DD is home with my mom all day and not really around other kids didn't really think she would throw tantrums. WOW was I wrong! lol
When she starts hitting herself we tell her that hitting isn't nice and try to distract her. other tantrums we just let her go.

Sometimes I get so mad and others I just want to laugh. He is a nut and I can't wait to see what the years hold.
