Questions to ask

So I'm going to start setting up appointments to interview pediatricians.  I've googled what questions I should ask, but I wanted to ask you all what questions do you plan on asking potential pediatricians?  Thanks in advance!  :-)

Re: Questions to ask

  • Some of these you can find out from their website or office manager:

Office hours are important. What are their after hour procedures? Do they have late office hours? Weekends?

Do they have rights in a hospital? Our pediatrician has rights at the local children's hospital. If my baby were to go there, he would see a face he knew.

Are their multiple drs in the practice? Do you see one each time, or whoever is available?

How many same day appointments do they offer (if your baby is sick and needs a same day appointment.) How long is the wait time generally?

I also asked about medical philosophy. Ours sees himself as a teacher and not a dictator. He wont tell us how to raise our baby, but will give us all the information we need to make an informed decision. He is also the pediatrician that my OBs kids see.

Ask for recommendations from friends if you know people in the area.

  • I like knowing that my ped has kids. I know this may seem silly but for me he seems to understad things a little better. My friend is seeing a ped that does not have any children. Some of the things she tells my friend seems crazy to me. It is very obvious she does not have any children of her own.

    1. Ask them what is their education on breastfeeding, when they think a min. breast feeding age should be. Our old pedi was amazing and we loved them, but when we moved I didn't realize pedis around here only take babies that were born into them so I got stuck with losers that blamed my son's reflux and my breastfeeding.
    2. Ask them about vax. If they are not strict on vax chances are they are the go to anti vax pedi. so kids there are more likely to not be vax.
    3. Ask their policy on ST. Some pedis are very opinionated on Ferber, and I think that is a parent thing not a pedi thing, but if you are for ST then you will want a pedi that is like you.
    4. Ask if they are open on weekends
    5. Ask if they have a separate sick/well child waiting area. My old one did. My new one does not. It is shitty, because you have to take your newborn to a room full off sick kids just to get a check up on development. Risking your LO getting sick.
    6. Ask if they are affiliated with hospitals.
    7. Ask about their ratio doctors per clients.
    8. do they make room for same day appts.
    9. Do they have any strict policies?
    10. Do they have any doctors in their practice that has any specialties.

I know this seems like a bunch of crap, but make questions off of questions. Take that list with you. Google pedi interview questions, I am sure something good will pop up.

  • Also if they are affiliated with an after hours clinic/emergency care center.
(Everything that happen at our after hours clinic is linked to our pedis office)
If they have or what support they have for BFing moms. (If you are planning on bf)
    And what everyone else said:)
