When I knew we were going to be moving forward with the IVF this month, I researched acupuncturists in my area that specialize in IF. I found one that has great reviews and is only about 20mins from me, but I didn't do anything, just saved the info on my desktop. So I was kind of just flip flopping about the whole idea when I see that very same place has a groupon right now for 6/45 min sessions for $75! So I took that as a sign and got that groupon, I'll call tomorrow to set up an appt.

Now- Please talk to me about your experiences with acupuncture!

@KC1212 I know you're currently doing it weekly, right? Where do they put the needles? I want to know if there's any craziness I should be prepared for. I figure each persons treatment is different, but I'm going to be going for the IF treatment so maybe it's sort of similar?

I'm pretty excited! I hope there's not a long wait for an appt!

I did acupuncture leading up to my fresh cycle and into my second trimester. It was really relaxing and helped calm me down a lot. I'm in the fence as to wether or not it helped, but I am not doing it this time due to financial reasons. Sounds like you got a great deal. I paid $80 a week.

She changes my needle location depending on what phase of my cycle I am in. I always get one smack dab in my forehead. I call in my chill the hell needle. A couple of weeks ago she gave me ear seeds that I wore for days. It's like slow release acupuncture. Google them. Kate Moss uses me for her cocain addiction!

They will check your pulse and look at your tongue.

Oh and she also puts a big thermal blanket on me. I go to sleep every time.

I will warn you, after my first treatment I felt worse - kinda like I had the flu. Just achey and tired. But now I feel great. I've read some people get insane amounts of energy.

Oh for me she put lots of needles in my legs and feet. My elbows, wrists, ears, and for a while in my stomach. It's kinda weird, you can tell when they are doing what they are suppose to. I'm sure that doesn't make sense now.

Thanks ladies! Do they typically do a treatment the first time you go, or is that more for consultation/diagnostic/etc? Is it painful at all?

Oh I forgot about the ear seeds. Love them. They helped me sleep. I got a treatment at the first session. I always got one too in the middle if my forehead.

my first visit was a consultation. It doesn't hurt (IMO) I remember the first time I had it done I had a lot of needles in my feet and my feet were sore the next day. But, I haven't been sore like that since.

I did it with my first IVF and I did have my dd. helps with stress and hot flashes caused by meds. Can you ask if they can do a treatment right after embryo transfer? There is a lot of research to show that helps!

Acupuncture is great and I really attribute it to helping my crazy cycles regulate. For a year, I was ovulating between days 19-21 of a 28 day cycle. That was late and the short luteal phase affected my chances of getting pregnant. In face during that year, I had two cycles at 32 days (of course I thought I was pregnant) but my doctor told me later that those cycles were actually "normal" so in a year of trying I only had 2 chances to get pregnant. Boo.

Anyways, fast forward and after 4 months of regular treatments, I started ovulating sooner -- first day 17, then day 16 and then back to day 13 or 14. I was so excited I took pictures of my CBEFM and sent it to DH. Haha.

My first appointment was a consultation and treatment session. It was about 2 hours long. depending on your eastern diagnosis, your acupuncturist will insert the pins where were are qi (chi) stagnations or on pressure points that lead to certain organs. If you're interested, check out "The Infertility Cure" and it'll explain acupuncture better.

The pins aren't supposed to hurt, but there were times were I definitely flinched when she inserted them because she hit a sensitive point. But the pain always disappeared. She also left me with a heat lamp on my body because I'd always get cold, along with a blanket, and without a doubt I'd end up asleep within 15 minutes. I always had needles in my wrists, in between certain toes, near my ankle bone, at the side of my knee cap (right side) 3 in my lower stomach above my ovaries, and 1 in my scalp at the crown of my head.

If anything, acupuncture de-stressed me! I'm so glad you are going and hope you find it as meaningful as I do! (Whoa, sorry for the long response!)

@khanley1980 I'm pretty sure the guy likes to do a treatment immediately before AND after transfer, from what I read on the website. I'm not sure I'll be getting that special treatment since I'm going to be brand new there and I'm starting my supressors on Tues.

I'll be happy with whatever they have available, and hopeful they can fit me in according to this cycle.

Those faces are exactly how the nurse at the RE office looked when I asked her if I should do it for the IVF cycle. But you know how I feel about them? At this point I'm going to try to do the opposite of everything they say and hope for the best :P
