Success after IF

My kid is spoiled

E is going through this phase. She wants exactly what she wants, exactly when she wants it. And if she doesn't get it? Melt down city. I am talking full blown throw herself down on the floor kicking and screaming every 5 minutes, seriously. At least. About the only time she doesn't throw fits is if she's outside. But I can't cook dinner or do laundry or get things done while she's outside. But the thing is, she doesn't even know what she wants. She will cry and cry and cry to be picked up, I'll wait till she's done with her fit then ask if she wants to be held, and she screams in my arms. But screams harder if I try to put her down. It's like I'm damned if I do and damned if I don't.

If the terrible twos are worse than this, I'm in serious trouble. So does anyone have any tips? Am I doing something wrong? Did your LOs do this around 15 months? Help! I'm losing my mind (and my patience!)

  • Oh yes :) You are not alone, my dear! Sometimes it's nothing and sometimes it's because he can't have or do what he wants. I always explain why to him, and then honestly, I ignore him. I really believe that works best when he throws that kind of tantrum. He usually gets over it quickly and continues on playing. G does the pick me up cry then put me down cry too. I also try to give him something to do nearby me to keep him busy and switch it up to keep his interest. Do you do sign language with E? I can't remember. I am finding it to be so useful during this transition to toddler hood. He is picking up new signs so fast now too.

I always laugh at the "terrible twos" comment. Yeah right. It happens way earlier and lasts much longer that two ;)

  • I think 13-15 months was the worst. I think they do know what they want but can't quite communicate it yet or their toys won't do what they want etc. Also the terrible 2's start at 11 months and last until they are at least 18 (yrs that is).

  • Ugh. I'm with you. One of my boys is a biter and the other is a hitter. DS1 has had some impressive episodes this week. Add in the three weeks of grandparents and we are in total tantrum hell. It's so, so special.

I taught parenting classes for years, but we mostly did older ages. I'm all over parenting teens! But, we always used methods from Love and Logic and 1,2,3 Magic. I'm planning on picking those up and seeing if I can apply the ideas to toddlers. I really don't know if it will help, but I'm going to give it a shot!!

  • @chiwifey and @ruthie04 I think I finally solved hitting in my house! We had taught E to use "gentle touches" to pet the cats and dogs. Now any time she hits, I say "no no, we don't hit, gentle touches please." Now instead of hitting me while nursing, she pets my face while nursing. And I tell her over and over how sweet that is and how gentle touches are so nice and she's such a sweet girl. It is such a relief!

  • Normal. I've been told that it's her only way she feels a sense of control right now but the best thing is if she's screaming the answer is no. Make sure she's not in danger of hurting herself but otherwise she only gets attention when she is calm. GL. I am sure it is easier said than done!
  • No tips here! We are in that terrible phase too because he can't communicate what he does want and we haven't the slightest. Just like becoming a picky eater which he never was. Been fun

    Married: 5/09 ~ TTC Since: 10/10 ~ PCOS ~ Progesterone from 10/10 - 2/11 ~ HSG on 3/18 - Clear ~ Started Metformin 1000mg & Clomid 50mg 2/11 ~ Metformin upped to 1500mg 4/6 ~ 6/7 Now going to SG and put on Clomid, Ovidrel, Gonal F, Prometrium, Estrace ~ IUI #1 7/2 = BFP!!!!!! March 6th our little man was born.

6/17/13 - Ovidrel, Follistim, Prometrium ~ IUI #1 7/2 = BFP! March 17th our St. Pattys day baby arrived

    10/29/17 - Started process for IVF, got pregnant & miscarried a 2nd time since summer. 2/22 started stims - Menopur, Gonal F, Cetrotide - retrieval 3/6 - , PIO, estrace 3xday - FET 4/18 = Beta 1: 616; Beta 2: 1342 = BFP

  • I never really thought about the communication issue. We are doing sign language with her, I guess we need to learn more signs and see I that helps. She's pretty good at getting her point across in some way, but like @mg0202 she is often wanting to do things she just can't do. The eating acorns made me giggle! Thanks for the ideas ladies.

  • Ugh, @TJ1979, I have a feeling that M is not far behind.  He throws tantrums sometimes, maybe a couple of times a day, and the only thing it works right now is redirect and distract.  But these darn kids have a real good memory now!  So whatever I try to distract M from, he always remembers what he was doing and wants to go right back to it.  Now I wish the object permanence phase didn't kick in so soon.

Speaking of acorn, M's BFF is a pro at picking up acorns and eating them!  His mom had to stop taking him to their closes park b/c it's littered with acorns.  Last week we were at our library play time, and that little devil crawled into a little storage cubby hole, then came out with an acorn!
