continue pumping?

I'm only pumping at this point and getting about 2-4 ounces per day.  Does anyone know how much breast milk they have to drink for it to be beneficial?  Just wondering if its worth continuing.  We exclusively breast fed for about 6 months and then supplemented with solids and formula since then (9 months the other day).  Thoughts?

I'm in the same boat, but I still nurse her morning and night.  I'd like to keep doing that, so I pump because I'm afraid of losing supply.

Do you nurse at all?  If not, I'd probably quit the pump unless I got at least enough for one bottle.  I think any amount of bm is worth it, but this is my thoughts on it.

  • thanks wildflower for the response, looks like my luke and your violet have the same birthday jan 15!  luke won't nurse anymore bc there is so little and he gets too frustrated.  ill see if i can increase my supply enough for a bottle.  thanks!
  • I was an over supplied at one time but have always EP'd but my supply is dwindling now too. I am going to try to stick it out the next three months. I would call my pediatrician and ask him what he thinks about your supply being so low and whether he thinks it is at all beneficial. I am still getting 5-6 oz per pumping session and pumping 4 times a day. I used to get 12oz a session. I think if I were in your situation and my doctor gave me the go ahead I might just give it up.
  • I don't think V gets a lot when she nurses either plus she so easily distracted she won't do it long unless she falls asleep, so I think the end is coming for that too.  Honestly, don't stress over increasing suppy now, you've done so great I wouldn't continue pumping if V wasn't nursing.

  • To quit pumping is a very personal decision. I'm in the exact same boat. I pump a mere 1-3ozs per session and I nurse at night. DS is too distracted and/or rough at the breast for me to nurse much else. My supply first took a dive when he started STTN more often a couple months ago and has steadily gone downhill since. I still pump twice at work, but I rarely pump at home with my kid on the move so much! I figure whatever amount of milk I can give him is good and I'm sticking it out for the last three months.
  • I think any amount is worth it but then again I'm not the one dealing with a pump. I hate using & cleaning the thing so maybe if I were only getting 2 ounces I'd quit.
  • Thanks everyone for the input! We have our nine month appointment on Thursday so we will see what they say!
