Cerclage with twins?

The MFM mentioned possibly needing a cerclage last week, and has placed me on Progesterone suppositories to see if that helps at all.  I go back tomorrow and I just want to know if anyone here has had experience with a cerclage?  Everything online says there is no medical reason for it with twins - it hasn't proven beneficial.  I just want to be prepared going into our appointment tomorrow if it gets brought up.  Ultimately, I have to trust him - just looking for outsiders experiences.  Are the risks worth it?  Bed rest seems to be pretty effective on its own...

Re: Cerclage with twins?

  • I have a cerclage but carrying a singleton. The procedure is a huge blessing from god but from my understanding it doesn't work well with pregnant with multiples. The weight if the baby will cause the cervix to open regardless and it can rip through the cerclage. I would bring that up to your dr maybe he has good success with cerclage with woman carrying multiples. How far along are you? What was your cervix measurements? The progesterone is a good idea. Why didn't he start you on injections instead?

  • I'm pregnant with twins and will be having a prophylactic cerclage placed at 14w. My MFM says that there isn't any proof that it helps in twins and that sometimes if you have a doctor that isn't experienced taking care of multiples patients or in doing cerclages that it can actually cause more harm than good. My MFM is actually a researcher who has made PTL prevention in multiples his main goal. He feels very confident that the approach of placing a cerclage will work and be has placed thousands of them so he knows what he's doing. I'd make sure your doctor is very experienced and that you feel comfortable with his suggestion.

The suppositories have shown better with multiples than the injections, so he did the suppositories instead.  Even those aren't totally "accepted" in the research industry as beneficial.  Last week I was at 2cm, no funneling ... I will find out today where I'm at and hopefully know what path to go.

    Also, I'm 20w4d now

  • Hi @Mcsweets,
I am also on a board on babycenter's website for cervical incompetence and there are a bunch of women on there pregnant with twins.  I like thebump's board for high-risk pregnancy but the babycenter's is more specific and I get answers and information specifically related to having an IC.  The link is here: https://community.babycenter.com/groups/a6685995/cervical_incompetence_support_group
Even if you don't end up getting a cerclage, it is a good place for us ladies with a short cervix.  There are women on there pregnant with twins with and without a cerclage.  There is one girl who is pregnant with twins, without a cerclage, and has been 4 cm dilated for 5 weeks now and still holding strong!  She's almost 34 weeks.  There are a lot of inspiring stories to give hope, as well as people who are going through the same thing you are.  Check it out!

Wishing you a long and comfortable pregnancy!
