You will know. It won't hurt anymore and will soften. Also, you will produce extra milk when it unclogs. It literally will let out any of the milk that has backed up. I always have to pump mine to get them unclogged. Good luck.
I get them a lot. As PP said, you will know because it will stop hurting and become softer. I do a lot of massage and warm compresses to work it out. One time I had to really squeeze (think like a big zit) to work it out.

Welcome to the world my miracle, we prayed and prayed for you, and we can't believe you're here!
I had clogs three weeks in a row last month (I'd get them on a Tuesday and they'd last until Thursday, which was weird). Pumping, massage, and some wet heat helped. I'd either take a very hot bath and lay on my side watching Orange Is the New Black and then pump or I'd pump with a small heating pad near the clog. Basically, I was hooked up to my pump as soon as DS went to bed and I'd pray for him to wake up in the MOTN so he would nurse fully and without distraction. In fact, I think what has helped keep them at bay the last few weeks is that I always nurse him when he wakes up in the morning on the side that had the recurring clogs.
