carseat question

So the CHP person I spoke with said that they are recommending that until she is 25 lbs she should stay in her infant seat.  Main reason is that crash tests are done based on weight and not height etc and the 25lbs is their weight amount.  SOOOO for now we are packing up her convert carseat ...

what are your thoughts on this??

Re: carseat question

  • There is a height on the seats and sometimes it matches the weight but not always. We had to move Z out of the infant seat cause the manual said 32 inches in height (some say within half an inch of the top) and he was almost there already but the weight goes to 35lbs and he's only 22lbs.

If she's not approaching the limit in height or weight, there isn't any reason to move her if you don't want to. To be honest though, I don't see any reason to not get one if you'd rather have it. Not everyone gets the infant seat and some just do convertible so they are tested for infants as well.

  • There is a height requirement as well, not just weight.  And the convertible seats are tested for infants, too-- some people go straight to convertibles and skip the infant seats.

I don't think you need to leave the infant seat if LO is still within the height and weight limits, but I don't think you need to avoid the convertible either.

  • I guess I am with @kiraliz2 that's why I was asking you guys what you thought.  I thought they were all tested for itty bitties... but I left the meeting with the understanding that the converibles were only tested @25lbs...(and up?)

@mandJS I will be keeping her in the infant one... just have a case of the "oh shiney's" since we have this fresh clean new one ready to be used :)

I thought both infant and convertible seats were supposed to reclined at the same angle (30-45 degrees)?

ETA: a question mark. I'm not a carseat expert so it's a question really :P

That was my thought as well.
Both the infant seat we have and the convertible have the angle marked (I don't remember, 30? 45 degrees??)
There is a line that must be level with the ground as well as a double check.
I'm pretty sure both types I have are the same angle. (Obviously, this is regarding rear facing seats)

  • There is no reason not to switch to the convertible carseat if you chose provided your child also meets the weight requirement for the convertible you chose.  I just switched my girls even though they have 10 lbs and 3 inches left in their infant seats mostly because I couldnt carry the weight of them and the seats comfortably anymore and because they tried to sit up constantly in the car.

All rearfacing seats must be able to recline to 30-45 degrees which is the same as an infant seat and many allow for the seat to be more upright for an older child.  The seat I use (Radian RXT) has an angle adjuster that allows the seat to sit up even further but can not be used until the child is 11 mos and have good head control.

I dont know what CHP is but unless that person is CPST (I am a CPST) they don't always have the correct information.  Many times the police, pediatricians, EMT, fireman that we assume know the correct info are not CPST and do not know the correct or most current info.  My landlord is a state trooper and is having a baby.  He just installed the seat and used both the LATCH and seatbelt because he thought that was best and was horrified when I started giving him the correct safety info.  He says people ask him for info all the time and assume he knows right.

  • @Jodiariel CHP is the California Highway Patrol. I agree that the learning and knowledge needs to be certified, and this gentleman was. (they are required every 6 months to update or recertify something?)  I do trust what he is saying, I also agree that convertible seats are OK to use BEFORE the 25lb mark ... but after much consideration I think what he said / meant was through the tests and studies children under 25 lbs are safest in the infant seat, yet not unsafe in the others.  Every child is different.  my child heal her head up at  xyz months , sits up at xyz months.. those body strengths are things that would matter and change the outcome of a crash (maybe) .

I think its the same idea as side or middle placement... in that tests show middle is safest.. but side is not Unsafe ... yet people choose what works best for them
