C-sections

How can I avoid drowsiness?

I'm having my second c/s early April. With my first c/s, I was so drowsy that I physically couldn't open my eyes and didnt get to see my daughter before she was taken to the nicu.

I have a new ob and practice this time and need advice on what I should ask of her. Do I say please don't let then give me anything that will make me drowsy? Do I need to talk to the anesthesiologist the day of? Can this even be avoided?

Re: How can I avoid drowsiness?

  • I agree, speak with the anesthesiologist.  I kept getting either a bit nauseous or really tired during my RCS a couple months ago.  As soon as either happened, I told the anesthesiologist and she was immediately able to give me something to help the situation.  I was glad I spoke up, it made everything much easier.

  • But I can't do that until right before the procedure...right?
Does anyone know what they gave me that made me so drowsy? Is there an alternative?
  • Anti anxiety meds can make you drowsy, Benadryl does too and they sometimes give that to help with the itching caused by the anesthesia. Just tell them you don't want any medications given that cause drowsiness without clearing it with you first.

  • Did you labor prior to your first cs? I felt like I was drowsy the first time around but I think that had more to do with exhaustion than the meds I was given.

No, it was a scheduled c/s and the drowsiness definitely hit suddenly so it was a result of whatever I was given
  • Anti-anxiety and some nausea meds will cause drowsiness. Just talk to the anesthesiologist. I had lots of med concerns, as there's a common component of the epi/spinal that makes me sick. Despite nausea meds, I vomited for the first twelve hours of my son's life after my first c-section. I discussed my concerns at length with the anesthesiologist and had no problems the second time around. Use your voice and advocate for your needs!

  • Talk to the anesthesiologist, they can do wonders with medications, I got itchy and he fixed it, I felt queezy and he fixed that too, he was really wonderful and if you express your concerns during your into to them, they may have better ways to medicate you.
