Rock and play to crib

My DS is almost 8 wks and since the first night home he has been in the rock and play. We tried starting him in the crib but he is such a squirmy baby that he didn't seem to like the big open space. After about 3 wks I quit swaddling him because he always breaks out of it. So I'm trying to get him to sleep in his crib and he sure seems to hate it. Any suggestions on what to try? I'm fine with him in the rock and play hut just scared if he is somewhere without one he won't sleep unless you are holding him or in a swing. After 2 hours of falling asleep and waking back up 5 min later and screaming I gave up and put him back in the rock and play. Suggestions on getting him to like his crib??

Re: Rock and play to crib

  • Have you tried the Swaddleme blankets with Velcro? That's the only swaddle my LO will stay in. My LO is still in the RnP because if reflux- not sure when we'll get the okay to transition.

I would let him take his naps in the crib. If he wakes up after 5 min and you have to put him in his rnp that's okay you've got to start somewhere. Also make sure he's in a deep sleep before putting him down (no sleep smiles, twitching, and when you pick up his arm it falls). I would imagine going from the rnp to the crib swaddling would help a lot too. I'd take pp suggestions and get the ones with Velcro.

    That's all I got! GL!

  • Does he sleep anywhere else while lying flat? Maybe he needs to be on an incline for now and getting a wedge for under his mattress will help.

  • Putting him down for naps in the crib so he gets the hang of it might help. Or transition him to the crib once he's already asleep. As for the swaddling, my LO could get her hands out of the gaps in the Velcro in the swaddleme blankets. I heard that's a common problem. The woombie was a life saver, there's no way she's getting out of that thing and she loves it.

  • I'm sure it's a no no but saw it from another moms suggestion and folded a couple towels under the sheet to act like the wedge would. Of course after I posted this I put him down in his crib for a nap and he falls righty asleep! Great but not sure what the difference is this time, I had a woombie that I tried earlier on and it seems like it just made him more mad to be all confined in there, did I mention he is a squirmer!! He hasn't been in his PNP yet so pretty much the crib is the only flat place we have tried.
  • Try the miracle blanket. DD was able to break out of everything else. I bought a vibrating insert to go under her crib mattress to see if that will help her like the crib but I haven't tried it yet. Hopefully I can get her in there for a nap today.
  • I've been worried about the same thing. For the past few weeks I've been putting LO in the crib for naps at least a couple times a week. I also use the swaddle me blankets and the gentle giraffe with white noise. We're 11 weeks now but she's only 8 lbs so we have time before she gets close to growing out of the RnP so maybe in another 2 months we'll be in the crib at night

My DS has been the same way except he sleeps in his swing. I started swaddling him using a swaddle with velcro (Swaddleme or Halo) you have to get it really tight. Then I elevated one end of the crib mattress a little with blankets underneath. I took two other blankets and folded them and then rolled them up so I had two 4-6 inch high rolls and put those on either side of him just below his shoulders to simulate the sides of the swing. He did really well with it and has been spending most of his sleep in his crib now.

He does fight the swaddle really hard, but he needs it to sleep well so I just use white noise and his mobile overhead to distract him from it. If he cries I pick him up and sway and bounce him until he settles down. I hope you are able to transition to the crib easily, good luck!

ETA: I have had success getting my kids to nap in their infant carseat if we are away from home. For DD I had to rock/swing it to get her asleep and for DS I have to bounce it up and down. For both I can usually stop once they fall asleep. Obviously you don't want him to take all naps in the carseat, but it is a good option if you are at someone's house and your child needs a familiar place to nap.
  • I need to try putting something under the sheet by his shoulders to see if that helps. The thing I wonder about swaddling is will it really help because he sleeps fine with the little moving around in the RNP but if I try to swaddle he breaks out or screams. I have tried the miracle blanket and his legs came out. I'm sure I'm not a pro by any means but thought I got it fairly tight.
  • DD broke out of all the velcro and wrap swaddles, but she sleeps great in her Woombie! It zips up, and she can't get out of it.

With it, we were able to successfully move from RnP to the crib. Last night she slept 7 hours straight in the crib!
