High School Teachers - Please come in!

I've been teaching high school speech and English for seven years. I no longer want to teach English and my school knows this. There is only one high school in my district and I don't plan on leaving as working 2 miles from home in the same district my DD will attend is very convenient. I would like to only teach speech but we don't offer enough classes to fill my my six per day.

I will be done with my Master's in Education in May and would like to continue on in another grad program to get 18 hours of speech credit. If I do this, I will be able to not only teach my high school speech classes but can teach dual credit speech classes though our community college. This would make me more marketable to my campus as well.

The only problem is that I would not be able to do school at night the way I am now. I'm wonderinng how many of you ever see teachers getting to have classes part time? I want to propose to my principal that I teach only speech (3-4 classes) part time so that I can attend school in the afternoons. Is this a ridiculous request? I never see any part time teachers so I'm wondering if it's ever done. I know I will lose benefits which is fine becasue my DD and I can use DH's plan.

If you think this is a legitimate request, when should I take it to my principal? After Christmas break? Spring break? What's the best time of year in your mind?

Re: High School Teachers - Please come in!

  • I've seen p/t teaching positions posted.  I was offered one as a reading specialist but I couldn't afford the cut in salary.   Assuming you're talking about next year, I would talk to the principal after winter break.  I think spring break is too close to the end of the year and winter break gives them some time to figure things out.

It doesn't really seem like you're certified yet in speech though.  I don't see how you could ask to only teach speech if you're not certified.

  • I worked part time as a public school English teacher for three years. They offered me the part time work in the first place because of budget cuts (they saved money by paying me less and not offering benefits). I'm sure your district would love the idea of part time, because if they pay you to do PT speech and someone else to pay PT English, they won't have to pay either of you benefits. Of course, your school's union may not like it. There may be some policy against something like that, for the teachers' protection (because otherwise, what's to stop the district from making all teachers part time?).

Anyway though, if you've been at your job a long time, I don't think it would hurt to ask. Worst they can do is say no...

I am certified in Speech, English, and Journalism. I'm talking about continuing grad school to get 18 hours of grad credit because if you have a Master's (which I will in May) plus 18 hours of grad credit in a specific subject you are qualified to work at Austin Community College. I live about 25 minutes outside of Austin and we just got one of their campuses in our town.

Our kids can take dual credit classes through ACC where they receive high school and college credit for the one course and they get to take it for free. Having teachers on campus that can teach both regular credit (just high school) and dual credit (high school + ACC) is a huge benefit for them. This is the position I want to get myself into. I'm hoping this will drive them to say yes to my request.

Thanks for the replies! I will definitely bring it up to my principal after Christmas Break.
