Does a breast run out of milk after a long feed?

Ok this random and I prob know the answer..but I have a large production, my breasts have always been full and took a long time to regulate but they're good now.
LO generally always eats for 20min and one boob only, this has always satisfied him. He's 3.5 months now - preemie.
Last few nights at his last feed before bed he has been taking boob one for 30 min before coming off. He's pretty much asleep but then all of a sudden eyes pop open and he starts sucking like he's hungry still. So I've been putting him on boob two and he eats for about 5-10 more min and then is done and goes to sleep.
So is it possible that boob one is now running out of milk for him after this really long feed?? I assume yes? I just thought it was an endless supply lol.

Also what's up with now eating for like 40min? Is that normal after 3.5 months of always eating for 20min?

We just really struggle with sleep around here so just trying to figure out his new nighttime routine.

  • That's excellent advice thanks! I feel so over tired I can't even think of the most logical things sometimes :(
Obviously he isn't getting enough now at night, for whatever reason..so will definitely try switching boobs sooner and maybe it will satisfy him more!
  • I posted that...I'm so glad others found it useful @msspeedymarie :) That site has probably been the most insightful thing I have found in regards to deciphering this whole BFing relationship with LO. It has a great perspective and I love that it's not the rigid/super structured guidelines you get from a lot of other sources.
  • LO may also just be comfort nursing on the first side for a while then the extra milk full of those great go to sleep hormones finishes off the job.

Another thing to consider is that when they've nursed for a while the milk is fattier which helps keep them full longer. By all means try switching sides sooner but keep this in mind in case you notice other changes.

  • LokiLahve - that is a great site. Thank you! I've often wondered about various things LO does while feeding. I know I have a crazy fast flow and so have mostly attributed it to that.
