My Dog Days

edited October 2013 in August 2011 Moms
So I'm sick of living with a dog.

If you guys remember, SO got a dog while we were split.  You probably also remember me admitting that I am not a dog person whatsoever.  Well, not that I'm not a dog person, I just don't like being a dog owner for my own various reasons.  That's why I've never gone out and gotten a dog, because I know I'm not a good dog owner.

Now, as predicted, SO has done nothing to train the dog, rarely spends time with the dog, still hasn't gotten the dog her final round of shots, still hasn't gotten her fixed.  I'm sure I also told you how we're not exactly rolling in money.  Hands-down, we can't afford this dog.  And I tried to spend some time with her and train her at least a little, but I don't LIKE the experience of working with a dog and I didn't sign up for this.  I already have my hands full with my human children.  This should be on SO but I've asked, then nagged as much as I'm willing and now this dog is just...doggin' around.  I don't know how else to put it.

She's destroyed clothes, diapers, toys, and furniture.  She's generally annoying.  I do NOT have the capacity to deal with this, and I've been open about that since the beginning.  But, you know, I'm between a rock and a hard place on this because re-homing a dog is, like, the worst offense ever in the history of dog ownership.

I don't know why I'm posting this, really, aside from needing to vent.  If anyone has any advice for someone who doesn't like having a dog but has a dog anyway, that's more than welcome.

I'd either take it back to where he got it, or I'd take it to the pound.  Without consulting with him.  If he wants to take no responsibility for her, then he gets no say in the responsible decisions.

And, I'm sorry that he's put you in this position.

  • Agree. Take it somewhere so it can get adopted into another home. I'm SO not a dog person, but DH is, and we have a dog. The deal was that the dog is pretty much his responsibility. If he hadn't held his end if the bargain, I would have looked to re-home. Dog ownership is a huge deal and a ton of work, you shouldn't be forced into dealing with a dog if it's not something you want.

I'd tell him he has 30 days to get the dog vaccinated, fixed and in training or I'm going to rehome/take it to a shelter.  And I wouldn't feel bad about it.
Sounds like a good plan to me!

  • If you do end up re-homing it, look into rescue groups you can surrender her to instead of taking her to the pound. Rescue groups place them in loving foster homes until they go to their forever home, the applicants usually have a strict approval process and at least you know the dog will move onto having a home instead of risk being put to sleep.
