Gripe water??

Reading on here is the first I have heard about it. Just wondering how many use it and what were the signs LO had that made u think he needed it. Is this something u need to consult with dr first?? Thanks. Just trying to figure out how to ease LO at night when he seems to have gas/irritated stomach.

Re: Gripe water??

  • I use it, I never consulted the doctor. It says on the bottle that it's good for hiccups and minor stomach upsets. I give half a tsp but she hates it. Smells awful lol like licorice and dill pickle.

  • I use it and didn't consult dr.y LO seems to like it, but it doesn't really seem to make a difference. It does help get rid of his hiccups though.

  • I asked our pediatrician. She said there were no studies proving its effectiveness and that it works by consolidating bubbles in the stomach and by making parents feel like they are doing something to help. She had no problem with us using it sporadically within 20 minutes of a full feed (before or after) because otherwise it is ineffective. She then reiterated/cautioned that it was unproven, untested, and that babies reach peak fussiness due to gas at 6-8 weeks and that riding it out may be the best course.

FWIW we didn't give it to DS1 but after hearing how well our neighbour's LO did with it we thought we'd try it for DS2. I think it's only made a small difference with fussiness but has worked well to stop hiccups.

  • The nurse in our pedi's office first recommended it and the pedi then gave his okay at DF's next weight check. It does work for our DD. She doesn't mind the taste and you can hear it causing the bubbles to move in her tummy. She sometimes seems a little surprised by the changes but never botheredby it. We feel it does help her rest easier when she is extra fussy.

  • My boys have always hated getting the hiccups, like "crying-pissed-off-make-it-stop-right-now" hated them. We use gripe water for that and it helps almost instantly.

We use it for hiccups as well, stops them instantly. I did not consult with pedi first. LO loves it, but she seems to like anything we've given from a dropper so far (gas drops and her daily vitamin D drops). I tasted the gripe water, it is a strong ginger taste.

  • DD also screams her head off when she gets hiccups. It seems to stop them quickly. It has a bit of sodium bicarbonate which seems to help soothe her tummy a little as well.

This is my LO, too. She calms when the dropper comes to her lips and takes gripe water or gas drops instantly. The gripe stops hiccups immediately and seems to keep her belly calm.

Same with my little girl too - worked almost instantly the first time we used it, less instantly the second time. I haven't used it too much but I did check in with the pedi and she said it's fine to use it (either this or Little Tummies which works in a similar way)

Yep, this. It also seems to help when he has gas pains.
