2nd Trimester

Early gender

Re: Early gender

  • They are a waste of money. I wouldn't go. Before 18w it's really hard to differentiate between the male & female anatomy, who knows what kind of training or how new their machines are. I just wouldn't get my hopes up.

  • I went to an elective gender place at exactly 16 wks and they said girl. It was confirmed at my a/s at 21 weeks so I think it just depends on the tech and the baby.
  • I went at 14w, spent $50.00, saw 3 lines, told girl. Went to my a/s scan at 16w (at a perinatologist's office) saw the clitorous, definite girl.

I think the ultrasound machines have come a long way these days. Maybe a few years ago an ultrasound before 18 weeks it would have been difficult to tell, but now it's getting much easier. :)

  • We are going at 15 weeks... they use a 2D ultrasound machine.. so it's very in depth where you are able to see the entire vertebrae and such... I know we could wait till end of November to get our 20 week, but it's also another way to SEE our baby before then too :) Double whammy! :)

  • I'll be 18w in my birthday, so we scheduled an elective u/s at an ultrasound center to find out the sex. It's really just for fun. They advertise 99% accuracy from 16w because of their training and equipment. If they can't tell for whatever reason (like the baby's position) then they reschedule you for free, or refund your money. If they aren't SURE they don't tell you. It's not very expensive....like $80.

  • I know someone who just had an u/s at 16 weeks and they weren't able to confirm anything for her, not sure if it was a needed one or she had asked for an early gender reveal.
I would just be worried they might get it wrong.
  • At 15.4 they couldn't tell with me.
  • I have had a friend do it and they told her it was a girl and weeks later at her anatomy scan it was really a boy.
  • i go every week for medically necessary ultrasounds. at every week from 12-18 weeks it looked like a boy. 18 weeks was my anatomy scan and it was confirmed it was a boy. if you want to know then go! why not

the earliest that i have gone was at 16 weeks...but it was only because i was anxious, and wanted to place a new to this baby instead of it...dont you just love it when everyone refers to your baby as it?  Good Luck, and i think its perfectly ok to do ...they stated she was a girl, and went back at 21 weeks to my ob, and she was a girl

  • My husband and I are going on Friday...... Hoping for accurate news!
  • We went at 14 weeks with my first pregnancy (DH was going to be deployed for my 20 wk AS) They said boy and he is now 13 months old. We just went back to the same place (again at 14 wks, since he is deploying) This time they said girl. If you compare my DS 14 wk scan to this one, you can clearly see the difference. I think it was totally worth the $45 to find out with my husband instead of waiting to tell him over skype.

  • Don't waste your money. We spent a ton and went at 17.4weeks. They said they were sure it was a girl.

Had the anatomy scan today at 19.5 weeks. I am measuring at 18.5 and they said the baby is a boy.

I don't know what to believe now.

  • Had an elective one at 17 weeks and she said it was a girl, got it confirmed at the anatomy scan. Definitely worth the $50 but I wouldn't have trusted anything had it been sooner. They looked at out NT scan and couldn't tell.

  • The MaterniT21 test will tell you the sex at 10 weeks!

  • My dr told us at 12 weeks with my son and 12 with this one, a girl. She was confident enough to encourage us to tell people. It seems to jbe commonplace at her practice. My friend recently went in for an elective at 15 weeks and was told boy, her dr confirmed at 20 weeks :)
  • I have two friends who were told at their 12 week scans - one girl, one boy and both were correct. I'm hoping that our office will do the same at our 12 week appointment (which will actually be 13 weeks)! I'm tired of calling the baby "it" :)
  • At my 12 week NT scan tech guessed boy. I could definitely see why she thought that. I had the Harmony test (high risk reasons) he is definitely a boy! Had I not had the blood test though I would not have been convinced for sure because babies look the same early on.

  • "Yes, do an expensive test designed to check for genetic abnormalities in high risk patients just to find out the sex!"

I had the blood test even though I'm low risk because it is SO MUCH MORE RELIABLE than any of the other screening tests that ARE routinely offered to low-risk women. No one here would think it at all odd if I had the quad screen or a NT check or whatever . . . I chose to decline ALL of those sorts of tests given their high false-positive rate and instead am having ONLY the cell-free fetal DNA test (and the 20-week A/S). It's spared me a lot of testing and fussing and uncertainty.

Finding out the gender was, for me, a pretty sweet bonus and not the real reason I had the test at all, but for women who want to know if their baby has Down's or Trisomy 13 or 18 or whatever, I don't think it's at all unreasonable to go the blood test route, even if low risk. I spoke at length with an OB who specializes in screening tests about all this before I chose to have the test, and he thought I was being totally reasonable. He actually was more skeptical of the utility of the 20-week scan for low risk women . . . and almost everyone here is having one of those without judgment.

Long rant to say, hey, don't judge! That's how I found out my (healthy!) baby's gender at 12 weeks, and I don't regret it AT ALL.

  • I had maternt21 done also but I'm high risk and 35+. It was great knowing in the top 5 tests baby is healthy and finding out at 12 weeks it's a boy :)
