Sippy Cup?

My daughter is 6 1/2 months, and happily eating solids 2-3 times per day.  At our 6 month well-child visit her pediatrician said to give her a sippy cup every time she ate solids.  Ever since she was young she has had some swollowing issues (used preemie nipples until she was about 3 months) due to a recessed chin at birth.  Everytime we give her a sippy cup she seems to choke on it.  We only put a small amount of water in it, and still, she chokes.  I'm wondering if this is normal and should I just let her figure it out?  Also what brands of sippy cups do you prefer?  Thanks!

Re: Sippy Cup?

  • DD chokes occasionally on the water in her sippy cup. Not every time, though. I'm a FTM so I'm not really sure what's normal, but I think it might be a good idea to ask your pedi about it.

I've only ever used the Nuby brand of sippy cup and I really like them. Nothing leaks out even when she's holding it upside down, shaking it, or throwing it.

  • Anatomically speaking if you have your baby tilt her head backwards while sipping there is an increased risk of aspiration due to her trachea being open. Try to have your baby sip with head as straight up and down as possible. The closer her chin is to her chest the better. If you are able to get her to do this then it shouldn't matter what cup you use as long as it doesn't free flow out of the bottle. You want her to have to suck a little. Hope this helps.
  • I've had a lot of success with the Playtex cups with a straw. She's still learning to drink from it without water spilling out of her mouth, but she's been getting better. Once she learned how to suck the water through the straw, she loves drinking from it.

  • Have you tried just an open cup? That's what our pedi recommended - she basically hates sippy cups. LO is doing fine with it, we actually give it to her in a shot glass (I know, but it is the perfect size and weight!)

  • We just started with the sippy cup about 2 weeks ago when she was 6 months. I bought 3 different ones and the one she likes the best so far is the babies r us brand training cup. The part where the water comes out is kind of similar to a bottle nipple. The other ones where to hard for her and she wanted nothing to do with them. I feel this is the best cup for starting off. She spit out some water in the beginning but now she is use to the flow.

  • Yeah we have a playtex soft straw cup... https://www.playtexbaby.com/mobile/CupsMealtime/Lil-Gripper/LilGripperTrainingCup DS figured it out the first time he used it and we've had no issues.
