Question about HCG after D&C and starting period

So, I had my 2 week follow up after my D&C. My OB wasn't tracking my levels down, and I told her that I was taking a pregnancy test once a week to track myself and that at this point the tests were still indicating HCG, but it was really faint. She seemed surprised I would still be getting a line on HPT, and mentioned that I would start my period again 4 to 6 weeks once my HCG levels were > 5. I've heard from other sources that your period comes back 4 to 6 weeks from the date of a D&C (I know these are general time frames and not set in stone). Has anyone heard of needing your HCG levels at zero (or close) before your body will begin a cycle?? TIA.

My guess is (literally just a guess) that your body wouldn't start the process towards ovulation if it still thought you were pregnant and therefore could easily delay AF until your levels are negative. I've only had my levels followed down after 1 of my D&C's. I don't know why & have never thought much about it (maybe it would be different if my cycles weren't returning regularly). Good luck!!

Thanks ladies! I guess I get to deal with PCOS and an unknown if whether my cycle will ever come back on top of the confusion of a TTCAL...sigh. Thanks for the advise

My period didn't start until after I hit zero on my blood draws. It took over 7 weeks for that to happen. I didn't have a D&C, I had surgery to remove an ectopic and my right tube, so I don't know how it might compare, but I'm sure for most of us levels getting to or close to zero before cycles restarting is pretty universal.

From what i remember it took at least 6 weeks and my HCG had declined substantially. After I went through a "super fertile" phase in which i conceived again. Unfortunately for me i had a 2nd loss, but now know it was probably due to low progesterone. I had quite a time with trying to find a supportive doctor and it makes miles of difference when i finally did. Not sure if you are doing the home testing because your dr wont..but highly suggest finding a dr that will get you as much data as you can...GL and sorry for your loss.

I didn't have my betas checked after my D&C, but I got my period after 5.5 weeks. After my natural miscarriage, I had my betas checked and got my period at 4.5 weeks, which was 2 weeks after my beta was down to 1. I also have PCOS, although I do ovulate on my own, just irregularly. I'm sorry for your loss and I hope that your body cooperates!

I just had my post D&C appointment on the 11th and it was about 4 1/2 weeks after the D&C. They tested my HCG and I am below the 5 mark and they said that is where I need to be. I had a missed miscarriage and was still up at 37000 the day of my D&C. The week after the D&C I could feel my hormones changing horribly. I am also newly diagnosed with PCOS so I am anxiously waiting for AF.

I think people typically don't get their period until hCG is at or close to zero, but I did. I got my period and was still testing + and went in for betas a week later and I was at 101. I ovulated twice after that before I got to zero. Not at all typical from what I understand, but it can happen. GL.

I wish I could offer advice but I haven't had my f/u appt yet. My Dr. is going to track my levels but I believe it is because she is encouraging us to try again as soon as I hit the < 5 mark. What I can offer though...BIG (hugs) FX for regular cycles for you!
