Diaper Rash S.O.S

DS hasn't had a diaper rash since he was 2 months old, and never this bad. His poor little butt looks raw and he screams when we wipe. We have always only wiped after poops, not pees. He came home Friday from Daycare with a wicked rash. It is now Tuesday and I kept him home with me (I work nights) because I don't want it to get worse at Daycare.

Long story short, what are your diaper rash secrets? I am waiting for the doctor to call back right now. I stopped wiping and am now just rinsing his butt when he poops. I put vaseline on first and then Desitin. And I make sure he is dry before applying. I also give him air time. What else can I do? TIA

  • triple paste
it's pricey, but worth it, works so good
dd was having wicked diarrhea and therefore really really bad diaper rash....took her to the dr, he said get some cortisone and desitin, but the daycare had triple paste, actually, they went out and bought it special for dd bc one of the director's swore by it....and it worked
i also did the cortisone twice a day, i think only half strength...once in the am and once at night
    but triple paste....try it
and making sure he's dry before putting it on helps too
we also let her sit in a warm bath too just to help soothe her...

  • i bought it at target, and i've seen it at walgreens too, but it was cheaper at target....i honestly didn't look at walmart, but i'm surprised they don't have it...it comes in a tub like thing....i'm sure bru or bbb should have it too....

  • DD only had one diaper rash at two weeks of age... we wipe after pees and poops - we use Huggies One-and-Done wipes (maybe make sure your wipes are hypoallergenic with no scents or perfumes?). Any time it gets a little red, we use Destin or Aquafor. I just wonder what they're doing at daycare! We haven't had DD enrolled, but I hear from mamas all the time how their LOs always have diaper rashes! Are they not changing their little diapers!

LO obviously has really sensitive skin, so I would also look into getting more natural soaps and lotions for him and seeing if that helps any. I've also heard "B's Butt Paste" works pretty good too!

Two babies, 11 months apart! We're in for a ride!
  • Make miracle diaper rash creme it works after like 2 applications. . You need to use a cotton ball to apply it because its hard to get off your hands. Also let DS sit in a warm bath with baking soda works wonders.
    Recipe as per my pedi.
    * 1 entire tube of Desitin reg strength
    * 1 entire tube of A&D diaper rash creme (the treatment kind)
    * 1small tube of bacitracin
    * 2tablespoons of malox I used the mint flavor

Mix everything together and store in a air tight container with a screw lid. Keeps forever. Good luck

  • We deal with a rash off and on.  When I see one coming on I sprinkle a little baking soda in her bath water.  We then us lidocaine (rubbed in really well) then top it with extra strength desitin for her diaper changes.  When I can I rinse her bottom instead of wiping it.  When she was really little I made my own wipes because even if a wipe is hypoallergenic or fragrance free it still has alcohol, which dries the skin out.  PP mentioned Earth Momma Angle Baby Bottom Balm, we use this at every diaper change as a preventative.
  • When DD's teething we have diaper rash problems because she poops more. The target brand of desitin max works for us and it's way cheaper!

We also switched to sensitive wipes (pampers or target brand) and it helps a lot!

  • Naked. I let DD spend a lot of time naked, she hasn't had a rash in a long time [we CD and I think that has a lot to do with it] but anytime she starts to get pink I let her spend lots of time naked and it usually goes away.
  • At daycare she puts desitin and cornstarch after every poop. She's never had more than a slight pinkness before so either that's working or we are just lucky! I swore by aveeno diaper rash cream with ds though. He used to get really bad rashes.

I was going to type all this and then I saw you already did. This is what we use, it's awesome stuff. I still have a sealed container of it in DS's dresser from three months ago. It lasts forever!
