1st Trimester

7 Weeks pregnant; do I have the flu or is this feeling normal?

Hello!

I'm 7wks pregnant with our first! It's a total surprise (only took us a month to get pregnant.... ) but we're so happy.

I am a profession chef, and I work with different foods allllll day long.

The last couple of days, I've been trying food before serving and eating on my breaks (bosses are amazing with giving me rest) but I feel so sick afterwards. I feel weak and sick all the time, and when I eat it seems to be worse. Smelling certain foods (mostly pork) makes me want to puke. I feel hot, and short of breath as well.

Am I getting the flu, or is this normal? Please tell me if there is something I can do???!!!!

Thank you!!!

Re: 7 Weeks pregnant; do I have the flu or is this feeling normal?

  • I'm 10 weeks pregnant now and I'm still kind of going through this. I work in a corporate job and about 8 weeks in, questioned how anyone works a regular job and is pregnant. I wanted to nap all the time.

If I get hot or out of breath, everything intensifies. I am constantly fanning myself now.

And I can't stand any smells. I used to eat a bacon, egg, and cheese biscuit every morning before work (they are like my favorite!) and now I can't even stand the smell of them.

  • That sounds pretty normal.  I managed a restaurant when I got pregnant with my oldest.  I had to leave my job around 9 weeks the nausea was so bad.  The smell of almost everything sent me running to the bathroom.  I have heard that unisom, b6 and ginger can help but I ended up having to go to Zofran with all 3 of my pregnancies.
  • regarding Unisom...i  take a half a pill every night before bed and it really helps me sleep and i wake up feeling pretty good!!!  It is safe to use while pregnant but the nurse did tell me just to take half of a pill:)
  • Sounds like what happens to me.  I take a whole unisom at night before bed and it works wonders.  Sees me through the night (when my m/s is worst) and most of the next day.

  • I caught the flu in February this year and it was the sickest I had been in a really long time. To me, the symptoms are somewhat similar, but with the flu, I literally felt like I had been hit by a bus and it came on suddenly. I instantly knew I was sick and can pinpoint the moment it happened (2:20 PM on a Monday afternoon in our school's computer lab). I went home and the fever got worse. I was out for a whole week and instantly started to feel better after that. I was back to normal after 2 weeks. (With being pregnant, don't get me wrong I feel like crap!) but the nausea and the sleepiness felt different...it never seemed to get increasingly worse over a short period of time but gradually peaked and then improved. With the stomach flu, it's usually puking/diarrhea for 24-48 hours and then definite improvement in how you feel. I think what you're going through sounds a lot like pregnancy symptoms.

I thought working with kids during the 1st trimester was bad, but you have it pretty rough working in a kitchen! Definitely try the unisom and b6... or ACUPUNCTURE! It worked miracles for me!! 3 sessions and my ms was gone!

  • Sounds normal to me.  The heat in professional kitchens can also make our nausea seem worse.  Make sure you stay hydrated.
  • Thank you everyone!

I'll be trying everything you have suggested.

I found today drinking lemon water and small bits of veggies have helped.
    I hope this ends soon!

    Thanks again!!
