Scheduled Inductions - Medically Neccesary

With my first DD I was induced at 42 weeks and it was a pretty traumatizing experience complete with 36+ hrs of labor, pre-eclampsia diagnosis and a severe hemorrhage.  My Dr. strongly believed that this was a "perfect storm" of being allowed to go so late and other issues that popped up. For this reason I have been working really hard to stay healthy and active and hopefully have a better experience. However, since my L&D trip this weekend for high BP pretty much all I have heard is that I will not be allowed to go full term.

I have an appointment with my Dr. tomorrow and I have a list of questions to ask, but I was wondering who else here has been induced early for BP, pre-e or another medical reason.  What was your experience like?  How far in advance was the induction scheduled? What was the outcome after induction (vaginal birth, c-section, etc.)?

  • Yea, I saw that one.  I kinda rolled my eyes at the OP for wanting to just schedule one for convenience.

I have been through an induction so I get how the actual induction goes, but I'd like more information about when the decision was made, how the process went.  I don't really know what to expect at this point and it isn't helping my BP at all!

  • I was told I'm not going to 40 weeks, I have HTN, and epilepsy. It will be discussed more in detail in the next few appointments.

  • No personal experience with pre-e or early induction, but I have 2 close friends who were induced early due to pre-e. One at 39w and one at 35w6d. Both ended up in c-sections.

  • I had high blood pressure my first pregnancy. We planned to schedule an induction at 39 weeks. However, I ended up having it at 38 weeks because my blood pressure was getting too high and I had a lot of protein in my urine.

  • I had pre-e with my first pregnancy that struck suddenly and severely. I went to a routine appt having gained 9 lbs in a week. I stood on the scale crying while the nurse pulled the doc in. My BP was way high, I had proteinuria and I was sent directly to maternity for induction. I was 35+6 at the time. Labor lasted 26.5 hours with 2 h of pushing and a successful vaginal delivery.

This time I was dx with pre-e at 26 weeks and placed on bedrest. I've been told they won't allow me to go past 37 weeks, due to the fact that pre-e is now thought to be a problem with the placenta and the risks go up the farther along we go. I do weekly labs and growth scans with placenta Doppler studies along with 3x daily BP checks. This week I will also start non stress tests. They have specific parameters for each study/lab that would call for induction at any time. I'm miserable on bedrest, but I'm praying I can hang in there for 6 more weeks.
  • I know that with first time moms anyway, the rate of inductions that "fail" & end in c-section is 50%.  I'm not sure if maybe that rate gets any better with subsequent pregnancies though.  really sorry, it sounds like your first experience was pretty rough! :/  hopefully things will go better for you this time around!
