18 month old hitting me and laughing...what to do at this age?

My 18 month old daughter is hitting me and laughing when I firmly tell her no. I do get out of her face and tell her I wont play with her and she stops for a little while but another hour, another day it happens all over again. What are you doing to discipline for this at this age??

I haven't had this issue with LO but lots of daycare kids have it. I always just do as above said: "ouch, that hurts" and then guide their hand to show & tell "gentle" and get all happy.

My child used to be rough with my dogs and I just repeatedly used the word gentle and showed her. She picked up on that. So I think whatever you choose to say as a key word to use the same one every time.

My DS (15 months) doesn't hit, but he has bit me twice now. Once I think he was giving me a kiss and then bit my lip. The other he just came up to me on the couch and bit my toe. I was so shocked that I didn't know what to do! I just said "NO. We do NOT bite. Gentle touches." It made him cry and I felt bad (he almost always cries when we say no), but I think any physical aggression (though I understand that's not what was meant necessarily by him!) needs to be taken seriously. My DS is in daycare and I would worry that if I wasn't firm with him about it at home that he might bite someone at daycare or somewhere else.

He does understand "gentle" and always rubs my face and says "awww" when I say gentle. So I guess I'd just emphasize that a lot. I think you're doing exactly what I'd do... Good luck!

My son is a little bit older, but we're dealing with hitting, biting, and hair pulling. The odd thing is that he doesn't seem to be doing it out anger or aggression and he smiles/laughs the entire time. I try to do the same things as mentioned above and haven't seen any improvement yet, but I know it took a while for us to see improvement when it came to him being gentle with our cats so I know it does work (eventually).

Pulling her hands away, putting her down and walking away. I try not to reinforce it either positively or negatively.

my son did this and we were putting him in time out until I spoke to a friend and she suggested that we ignore his behavior. Since he was laughing he was doing it because he thought it was funny. We decided to just ignore it and in less than a week he stopped. Now he would still be put in time out when he hit for malicious reasons but not to get a laugh.

My 19 month old son likes to kick and slam his head into you and thinks its funny I have tried holding his legs or his head and explaining we dont do that it is not nice and he still continues so he has three strikes to stop which most of the time he doesnt and he goes right into time out. For awhile I used his highchair as a time out station but he would still bang his head into the chair and I mean hard like it hurts my head watching him so now we goes into his crib I turn the lights off and take out his favorite blanket and stuffed animals so that why if he wants to kick and slam his head back it wont hurt too bad usually after 5 or 10 minutes he calms down and me and my husband will go in and again explain what ever he did is not nice and then he will come give me or my husband who ever put him in time out a hug

I held her hands and said "We don't hit. Now we're going to count to 10." and then counted to 10. I had to do this twice and she hasn't done it since.

We have a pack and play set up in a corner of our living room. We use it as a place to put him to calm down when we tell him no and he laughs (like dive bombing the dogs bed) or when we remove something and he has a meltdown. He cries when going in and comes out when he calms down. It takes a minute or so. We only have a few NOs (dog bed, stove, standing up on chairs/toys) that are basically safety related. We don't want to overuse it.
