Night terrors or something else

DD has been waking screaming bloody murder about 2 hours after we put her down.  DH says that when he goes in, she is usually standing up in her crib and frantically trying to climb out of the backside of the crib.  He says she seems very disoriented and fails her body when he tries to pick her up.  She is usually histerical crying and she usually screams out for me (MAMA).  It almost sounds like she's possessed the way she screams for me.  Her eyes are open and she does appear to be "awake".  She usually calms down quickly if I nurse her.

DD is 18 months.  I have always put her to bed at night (I still nurse her to sleep).  She's never been a great sleeper but DH has always been able to go in at night, calm her and put her back down fairly quickly.  This started happening last month then everything was fine for a couple of weeks and then she just started doing this again last night.  I'm not sure if it's night terrors or separation anxiety or what.  It really worries me because next Friday she is staying over my parent's house.  (DH and I are having a much needed night away)  She's stayed with them before and everything's been fine but I'm worried about this happening while she's there.  I'm worried they won't be able to calm  her down.

  • I read somewhere that kids can get night terrors if they are dressed too warmly. That seems crazy to me, but maybe that's it?

I don't think she's dressed too warm.  We put her in pj pants and a short sleeved pj top.  Her hands always feel freezing.  I do cover her with a blanket but she actually doesn't like to be covered.  She is in our bed from midnight on and she is constantly kicking the covers off.
