Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

18 month old standing on handle of oven drawer and reaching stove....

What type of safety guard are you all using for this?? I am so scared of her reaching up to gas flame and burning herself. I tell her no and move her somewhere else but she keeps going back!

  • our kitchen and living area is in one, the wall span to block off is about 20 feet. I am in the kitchen and do not walk away from it when cooking but yesterday in the time I opened the fridge she was already standing on the handle! I think I may get my husband to remove the handle on the drawer....at least for now she wouldn't be able to reach anything.

  • I like the remove the handle idea. Going to the fridge and LO is already up there is crazy scary to me.

  • When we moved in, the previous homeowners had a shield on the stove that blocked access to the stovetop.  It's hard to describe, but basically a piece of plexiglass that is bent somewhere between 90 degrees and 180.  There are 2 large u-hooks on the oven door below the door handle and the large piece of plastic goes between the handle and the door and rests on the hooks.  The bend in the plastic is then above the door handle and comes out towards me so I can comfortably reach the knobs and the stove top. Allows us to use the stovetop, but keeps DS from getting near it all.  We haven't used it yet since we moved in, but DS did go for one of the knobs the other day, so I'm sure we'll be putting it on soon.

We have knob covers and the BRU stove guard I linked above. I like the PPs suggestion of taking the handle off the drawer also. DD hasn't figured that one out yet, so I think I'm going to take the handle off before she thinks of it!

  • My oldest son started doing this at 14 months!  We removed the handle & it's been so much better now.  It hardly ever tries to play with the knobs.  There is a cabinet next to the stove/oven.  We basically let the boys have that cupboard to play in.  There's a bunch of old tupperware in there.  I think that helps redirect them.  We also have an open floor plan.  I looked into getting a gate, but couldn't find one wide enough.  So like others said, start with the handle removal.

  • In those dangerous situations, I actually do yell- stop danger. I have scared my now 22 month old on two occasions- when walking and she went to step in street, and when she went to touch stove.  I think removing things are fine, but I think being firm (and honestly, I dont care that I scared her) can work when they are that young.

When she does go closer to stove now, and i nicely say no, she says danger, hot. :)

  • I'm having this issue too. Last week he burned himself on a burner that was still warm a while after cooking, and since then hasn't been doing it as much. (Not that I'm saying to let your LO burn themselves!) But ya know, sometimes learning the hard way is the fastest way for them! Anywhoo, the constant NO, HOT!!! and redirecting seems to finally be sinking in after 4 weeks of it. We looked into taking the handle off, but there was really no easy way to do it, and it also would have left sharp holes in the bottom oven drawer that could become another hazard entirely.
