Advice People Give...

We took Camden down to visit our family this past weekend and we heard a few weird suggestions/wives tales from various family members

1.  Rubbing the bottom of baby's foot will cause them to stutter
2.  Holding a newborn too much makes them sore

My crazy grandma had the following advice:

1.  "Go put him in the pool now because then he will learn to swim.  I took your uncle to the community pool when he was a newborn and would walk around and dip him.  He has always been a swimmer.  He swam for nine months so the water won't bother him."

2.  "I fed all of my kids cereal in their bottles when they were one week old and they all slept wonderfully.  The up every two hours did not work for me."

What is the strangest/worst wives tale/advice you have heard lately?

  • The 'Whiskey for teething' always bothered me,as did the 'holding them too much spoils them' one. :-q

  • Well, although I would not recommend dropping your newborn in an unsanitary public pool, they do say we are born knowing how to swim. We forget as we get older though and have to relearn. However, I personally wouldn't go around testing that theory too much. Lol. But I do the infant survival classes are supposed to be extremely effective and start pretty young.

I have also heard that babies get sore easily. But not from being held to much as being passed around too much. No clue if its true.

We heard the sore thing from several older relatives!  And, I heard it id best to start babies swimming early on but dunking your newborn under water especially in cold weather is not happening!

  • The swimming bit, I can understand- did you know babies are born with a walking reflex, but lose it after a while of gaining weight and growing because they aren't accustomed with gravity? Watch the science of babies, found both online and on netflix. Back to swimming, infant swimming is very popular here in Florida, but the classes can be very expensive. I'd be too afraid to think I could effectively teach my infant to swim.

I've heard the cereal bit, too. Well, I was told 1/2 tsp of baby oatmeal, and I'm thinking about trying it. I've been promised that it helps baby sleep at night for a solid 5 hours. (but not to try it for at least two weeks after birth)

  • Well apparently as soon as my grandmother brought my uncle home she was feeding him fried eggs because he was SO hungry. I really don't even understand how that's possible, and today he weighs over 300lbs......
  • I hate this kind of crap . . . DH's family is especially terrible about it. His Gma has told me that I shouldn't pick the baby up too much because it'll spoil him, MIL has told me that breastfeeding doesn't give as many nutrient as formula, and his brother told me that you have to give a pacifier because it make the teeth come in. WTF?????

  • My mom keeps asking me to make my baby cry, because he doesn't cry enough and it's not healthy (I'm counting my blessings because I have a easy and relaxed baby) and my grandmother told me to leave him alone when he cries because I will spoil him if I tend to him. WTF??
  • To give LO a bottle with water as he's thirsty. Really? STFU if you are stupid.
