My doctor is a vampire.

9 vials of blood. They had to put me in the reclining chair and give me apple juice. And I may or may not have cried a little.  And I still have to go back next week for more. Anyone else have a blood thirsty OB?

On a happier note, we got to hear the baby's heartbeat. I'm trying to think about that and not my poor achy arm.

ETA: More stuff.

Re: My doctor is a vampire.

  • I just had 5 or 6 on Friday, but it doesn't bother me.  Considering your body has SO much more blood volume, it isn't a huge deal for your bod.  I am just so happy they aren't fasting tests.

Why do you have to go back in a week?  Second Tri?

  • Besides that it hurts you... Sorry if that sounded insensitive.  I didn't mean it that way!

@KatieGummow - Today's bloodwork was primarily to get a better sense of my health. Next week is for prenatal screening. I am terrified of needles so it was no fun for me.

ETA: Don't worry, I didn't think you were being insensitive.
  • Ugh that is no fun.  Well I am sure the results will be great and it will be worth the agony!

  • My doc felt bad enough for me the other week when we did prenatal screening that she said we could be done at 3 vials instead of five cause I almost passed out and got real pitiful. But we have to do the other two vials when they check for GD at 24 weeks... So I really am just prolonging the awful blood draw experience :/
  • over the course of next week ill have to give a lot too....  have my 16 week screenings (so 2 or 3 there) then early glucose test (idk how many there) maybe more depending what ahppens from there. blah i hate it... i have to look away or ill pass out.

  • The last time I had to give blood it was about 7-8 vials.  As long as I don't look at what's going on, I'm fine.  The previous blood draws were only 1-2 vials.

My first thought when I read the title..... Does he/she sparkle?

Sorry you had a rough time!

  • My first round of blood draws at 7 weeks was awful...8 or 9 vials. Yuck! Glad that's over with. I can't believe I gave blood a few times in high school. I am not that brave anymore!

  • Why so many? What are they testing for? I had 3 small ones. She tests for A1C and my thyroid to monitor my synthroid. I think she's even dropped A1C at this point.
  • In the beginning when my first doctor thought I was miss carrying. I had to go in every week to check my HCG levels. I've given so much blood already this time around.
  • I had 9 after my first appt too! I literally looked at the guy after the 4th and was like "Ummmm How much more do you plan on taking?" He responded "Oh girl, get used to it. This is what it takes to become a mommy!".

  • I feel your pain. I had 3 rounds of blood draws the same week. 2-3 vials for this, 7-8 vials for that, two more vials for the other thing... I'm just grateful I don't mind needles. :\

  • I had blood work for my nt scan yesterday and they took 11 vials of blood. I looked over and said woah that's a lot is that safe?? And the poor lady goes "well I promise I didn't fill them up i just read your orders." I felt terrible it just shocked me! So much blood. My dr must be Dracula as well :)
  • Ugh I feel your pain. :( I hate needles, blood, veins. ack! Just the words make me lightheaded. When I had my first blood draw for my first pregnancy I fainted. After that I also became terrified of fainting. I always ask to lay down now though so I haven't ended up on the floor since that first time. The good news is - your doctor is obviously being very thorough and that is a good thing! :)

  • I've had blood drawn at the last three appointments, and while I don't really have a problem with needles, it was still a terrible experience... I've had trouble staying hydrated so finding/ keeping a good vein has been impossible for them... I've been poked a total of 11 times at the three appts just to find the blood. Super fun :-/
