Growth Scan

So for those of you that have had these, what exactly are they looking for besides the size of the baby? Dr told me not worry, but he wanted to check out the progress next week(37weeks) and do a growth scan. I'm not worried. More or less just curious if LO will be too bunched up to actually be able to see her. When you BTDT moms had these, did you actually get to see LO good?

P.S. embarrassing moment...I had a hole in my sock and didn't know it until I got undressed at the dr office. Not sure why I was embarrassed about that and not being half naked on an exam table:)

ETA: Cervical check on my anniversary not fun. What a cock block!

  • My OB said I might be a candidate for a 37w growth scan b/c DS was 90% at the 20w a/s, so they want to assess size.  My MW hasn't mentioned it though, so I won't.  My DD was also 90% at 20w and was born early at 90% and it was fine.  So I am hoping the same for DS.

  • I had an ultrasound yesterday at 36 w 6 d and it was not 3d but you can still see the face pretty good and we watched the baby licking the placenta, it was pretty cute. Other than that they will probably also look to see if the baby is doing breathing movements and take all the measurements.
Also it depends on how low the baby is too.
  • At our growth scan we were able to see LO pretty well, but ours was at 32 weeks so LO was not as big.  I have had a few BPP's since then but it's been harder to see LO very well as he gets bigger.
  • They check for size, estimate the weight, head circumference and fluid levels. Mine was done roughly about a week ago.

I had one last week at 33 weeks and they measured her head, belly and femur to get an approximate weight and measured the amniotic fluid.

ETA:  We didn't get super clear pictures but that was just how she was situated with her hands in front of her face!
  • Checked baby's size and my fluid levels.
THIS.  They also look at the blood flow from the chord to the baby.
  • Checked baby's size and my fluid levels.
This. And don't hold your breath for awesome take home pics. E was so squished in there I could hardly tell where her head was and what body parts I was looking at.
Thanks! This is kind of what I was thinking. Since I am so far along now, I figured it would be hard to really see anything. My take home pics at my A/S weren't that great. We could see her really well on the screen but the pics weren't as good. Oh well. As long as she is healthy, I could care less about a picture.

  • I had mine at 32 weeks, and it was just the measurements to get an estimated size and check fluid levels. I was able to see LO's face enough to be sure that he looks just like his big brother.
  • Usually they check my baby for size and his fluid. To estimate his size they take measurements of his head, tibia and an arm bone - maybe something else too, I can't quite remember. My scans always include checks on my ovaries since one has been taken over by a giant cyst. It looks like a big black blob on the screen, kinda creepy.

  • All of the above & I second the bad pictures. I hardly saw LO's profile, it was mostly zoomed in pics of the head, stomach, etc. Good luck!
  • I had mine yesterday. They looked for size of baby, position (e.g. vertex/breech/transverse), and amniotic fluid levels.

I had a good sized baby but LO is breech (which I knew already) and fluid is low... so I have to have another tomorrow.

  • They set me up for one on the 29th...Dr. isn't concerned, but because the baby is measuring big, they want to know how big because if it comes down to they baby not making it's own way out they want more insight for a forceps or C-section intervention.

  • I had one at 33.5 and will have another in a week at 37.5. At 33.5 we got no pictures because you couldn't see much of anything. She was face down and sleeping so we saw the back of her head as a round thing that wasn't doing anything and then what I thought was a leg the tech said was an arm. All she did was measure and check amniotic fluid and the whole thing was over super quick. This tech isn't known for pleasantries. My 20 week A/S was seriously 15 minutes tops.. Nothing fun & extra!

I would go in with low expectations, and maybe you will be pleasantly surprised!

However, I must say the relief of knowing everything was fine with the baby and the fluid was HUGE and I came out of it not even a little disappointed for that very reason.

hahaha - this made me laugh a little too hard!

I have my growth scan in 2 weeks (28th).  Good to hear what others said.

I know they're looking for size/fluid levels, but will they be able to tell position?  I'm 99% sure baby is head-down, but I think she's facing forwards (instead of backwards like she's supposed to) - I know it's not too important at this time, but my curious side would like to know.
  • They'll be able to tell you if baby id breech, head down, anterior or posterior, based on the u/s. If they can see LO face, then she's posterior instead of anterior.

  • Checked baby's size and my fluid levels.

This. My doctor also wanted to see that LO was practicing breathing.

  • I had mine bc they were worried he was too small...not the case at all!! We didn't get any good photos but we watched him tugging away on his umbilical cord!!
