9 week old not napping!

HELP! My 9 week old suddenly doesn't nap well at all! She'll do 1 good nap a day and rest is pretty much falling asleep while nursing but for only like 10 minutes. She needs more sleep! She's also waking a lot during the night now about every 2 hours...when she was doing every 4-5 hours. Growth spurt maybe?
Any advice? Is your LO on a schedule yet?

Re: 9 week old not napping!

  • How often are you putting her down for a nap?  It's possible she's getting over tired.

  • my LO is also 9weeks and is doing the same as yours!! Im not sure what it is but Im very tired. She sleeps with me at night and for her naps I put her down. I try to nap with her during the day b/c im tired and have a cold but she wont nap longer than15/20mins.
Dahlia really doesnt like to be swaddled b/c she likes for her arms to be free and I always hear her trying to break the swaddle and I feel bad so I undo it. She makes these noises that melt my heart and I just cant force her!! I will try to do the swaddle once shes asleep to see if that helps.
I also will try adding white noise..GL
  • i give my LO a good warm bath and feed her full. i take my time doing things to let her cry and wear herself out a little bit and i notice a warm bath gets her quiet and then feeding her.
  • I'm not blessed with a LO who will fall asleep on her own; I have to swaddle her and put her down.  She's about 10 weeks and is up for only a little over an hour at a time before she starts getting cranky and tired and I know that it is nap time.  Are you making sure she isn't up too long before trying to get her to nap?  At this age awake time is very short.

as sad as this sounds, I'll do the same with the crying if my DD hasn't been sleeping well. I also BLAST white noise because she can only sleep in noisy environments.

  • Anywhere from 2 months on you will see the emergence of the cat nap, which likes to hang around for...months.  This is actually fairly normal developmentally, however the regression in sleep is most likely due to over tiredness.

What are you doing for the one good nap? Whatver you do, try and replicate that for subsequent naps.  Most babies around this age do need assistance going down, so you might need to develop a nap time routine to wind her down.

  • My son did this for about a month I think when he was around 3-4 months old. He would take like 3 30 min naps during the day. It sucked cause I couldn't work out or get much else done during that time. I tried everything I could think of. Eventually he just grew out of them. I would just go down to his crib. If he was screaming, otherwise I'd let him stay in his crib for about an hour. Good luck!
  • My daughter has been doing the same thing for the past few weeks and is also 9 weeks old.  She really only takes long naps during the day lately if she's in her swing and then she can sleep up to 3 hours.  According to the Wonder Weeks app, she is going through a leap so I guess that's what is causing it.  She got her 2 month shots the other day and I gave her Tylenol.  I think that has made her sleep more because today she slept for 3 hours late morning while we went for a walk and ran errands and now she's sleeping for a few hours in the swing.  Or she could just be catching up from fighting sleep the other days.
