Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

hates baths

all of a sudden my 17 month old, who used to love baths, now screams and cries through them.  At times, she locks her body and refuses to sit down in the tub.  Please tell me this is a phase.  How can I get her to love the bath again?

Re: hates baths

  • DD went through that. Instead of a bath I started sticking her in the shower with me and she loves it. She sits and plays with her toys while I wash and then I soap her up and we get out. Now she has figured out how to plug the drain so I let her and I get out while she takes a bath. It only lasted about 3 months.

Could it be that she's cold? Since they don't sit submerged, maybe it's coinciding with cooler weather. Could you wrap a hand towel around her just to see if that's it? My daughter loves the bath but hates when I have to rinse her hair. I have to do it all sneaky like, but if she feels it then she screams and tries to climb out. She also has this submergible book that she loves that plays music, she actually plays with it more outside the tub. I guess I shouldn't be suggesting using a toy to get them to do stuff they need to do, but maybe it'll get her past this phase.

  • My daughter went through a phase like that around this time last year. It was, indeed a phase, although it lasted a lot longer than I would have liked. Your LO will probably snap back out of it and love bathtime again.
  • Mine did that at 12 months. Fortunately, it only lasted about a week.

  • DD1 went through a phase like this when she was a little younger.  The only thing that got her out of it was putting her in the bath with her older cousin.  She saw how much fun she was having and from then on she was over her fear.

  • Can you give LO new things to play with in the bath?  There are bubbles, bath tints, bath crayons, etc.  The foam puzzles sticks to the side of the tub.
  • I agree with trying a shower with you. My DS loves being in the shower. I'd also maybe try going in the bath with her. When my DS was 10-11 months or so he went through a time when he'd scream and cry in the bath. I got in with him a few times and that's all it took before he was back to liking them again. Good luck!
  • Try new bath toys.. Try lots of bubbles.. Maybe get in with her??
