Does anyone give snacks yet?

DD has 3 solid meals a day now, mostly finger foods except for things like yogurt and applesauce.   She typically nurses 5-6 times per day.

This past week I've been offering her a little snack once, occasionally twice per day.  Usually just puffs or melts, she loves them and I don't usually give them at meal times anymore.

I can't remember when I started offering DS snacks consistently. I think this is on the younger end, but it's not enough to affect her milk/meal intake.  Just curious if anyone else does small snacks yet?

ETA:  My DD is 9 months
DS (7 years old) from FET in 2010
DD (5 years old) from IUI in 2012

Re: Does anyone give snacks yet?

  • During the week, DD eats breakfast, lunch, and 2pm snack at daycare, then dinner at home.  She nurses (or has a 4oz bottle when I'm not there) 5-6 times per day as well.  Sometimes she doesn't like what daycare offers, sometimes she does.  We don't typically do snacks on the weekend, because if she's hungry I just let her nurse.  And we're usually running around doing errands and whatnot, so it just doesn't fit right now.

  • We're similar to the PP's schedule. My LO eats breakfast, lunch, 2pm snack and dinner and has four 6-oz sippy cups of BM a day. On the weekends we sometimes skip the snack because of her nap schedule (she rarely naps at daycare and sleeps for 1-2 hours at a time at home) so if she skips it then we just wait til her 4pm milk. For a snack we do anything from just some applesauce to puffs, a few crackers, etc. It's typically just something quick to tide her over til her next sippy cup.

  • DD expects to eat whenever anyone else is eating, even if she just ate. That's not an issue normally because she usually just wants a bite or two, but if it's something she can't eat (she doesn't have any teeth yet so crunchy things are hard for her to manage) we give her puffs (we call them baby cheetos)...and this kid LOVES baby cheetos, so she ends up eating a snack sized portion of them before we can distract her and hide them, lol.

My LO is the same way with the baby cheetos!! She's obsessed with them!! She knows what the container looks like now too so we can't just leave it on the table anymore lol
  • At 9 months, DS was not having snacks, except on weekends if DH & I have a snack around 5'ish pm, then we'll give DS a handful of puffs.  I SAH and honestly, it was hard to find time to add a snack to his schedule... he was nursing 6x a day plus 3 solid meals, so I felt like I was feeding him nonstop all day long (he STTN, so we're talking 9 meals in a span of 14 hours).

Now at 11 months, he is down to 4 nursing sessions a day, so I have added 1 snack a day, plus 3 solid meals.  The snack sort of replaces a nursing session, so I try to offer him food that is more nutritious than puffs or cheerios.  I usually do hummus with fruit or pita bread; or yogurt and fruits.

  • We do. When I'm out and about running, I usually have cheerios or puffs. At home I offer banana, apple, yogurt or string cheese for a snack. He loves the melts too, but we tend to give him those for his "dessert" after dinner now because he'd make a meal out of them :)

  • DS is 9 months, and is offered dinner every night but we're still pretty hit or miss on breakfast and lunch. However, he is OBSESSED with puffs and gets those a few times a day as a snack, when we need to entertain him for a few minutes.

They're the only food I've never seen him turn down.
