Whooping cough vaccine

I'm not normally on this board but thought some of you might understand. Is anyone opting not to get the whooping cough vaccine while pregnant? I don't want to start a debate but I was considering getting it after baby is born and I'm worried about transferring antibodies via breast milk. Anyone in the same boat?

Re: Whooping cough vaccine

  • I will be getting the vaccine whilst pregnant, as I want to anti-bodies to pass to my baby if possible. Are you saying you don't want the anti-bodies to pass to your baby?

  • I had it at the end of the pregnancy to help give my baby immunity. First pregnancy I had it 2 weeks after the birth. Logistics wise, I would say it is more convenient to have it done before baby is born when you aren't as tired and don't want to leave the house.
  • When I was pregnant with DD 3+ years ago it was not approved for pregnant women, so I got it right after DD was born.  Honestly not sure what I would have done had it been approved for pregnant women.  I do get a flu shot every year pregnant or not, so I probably would have done it.
  • My OB did not give it while pregnant. The instead gave it right after I delivered.  I was fine with that and got it in the hospital the day after I gave birth to LO.
  • I got mine at 34 weeks. I talked to my midwife and my primary DR both strongly recommended it prior to delivery. I am due any day now and I am glad that hubby and I are protected. We had grandparents get it too

  • I got it while pregnant and was really glad I didn't wait. My arm was sore for a week, and I was really glad I didn't need to lift a baby!

  • I'm not sure I would worry about transferring antibodies through breast milk, after all, isn't that part of what makes breastfeeding so healthy for baby, the antibodies you can pass along? From what I understand, whooping cough can be deadly for babies, so it is definitely good to get the vaccine. (Keep in mind that I rarely take medicine and I only recently starting getting a flu shot every year because my work offered it for free!)

Here is a website to check out:
    https://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/adults/rec-vac/pregnant/whooping-cough/index.html
It includes information about the effects on breast feeding.

    Hope this helps!

  • With DD2 I got the whopping vaccine while pregnant. Like one of the PP's said, I wanted my LO to develop some immunity to it prior to being born.
