S/O Mirena - anyone have Paraguard?

I'm looking into birth control for after my current pregnancy.  Once we decide we're done, DH will have a vasectomy, but we think we might like to try for a third in the future.  I've had issues with hormonal birth control in the past, and I've read that Paraguard is non-hormonal.

Anyone have any experiences, positive or negative?  Thanks!

Re: S/O Mirena - anyone have Paraguard?

  • I got Paragard in June or July.  I like it so far.  I had pretty bad cramps for about a day or two after it was inserted.  I also had really heavy periods and harsher cramping for the first few cycles, but that is a common side effect of Paragard.  I went with it because it is non-hormonal.  I had been on the Depo shot for 10 years and I was done pumping crap into my body.

  • I got mine in a few weeks ago. I have a pretty high tolerance for cramping and whatnot. I had cramps a couple days after insertion off and on. Naproxen sodium helped. I just got off my first period with it in, and I will say that I had to go up to a super + tampon because I bled through a super in 2 hours. I only have a 2-3 day period though, and that didn't change. Honestly I wouldn't look back. I don't have to think about it and I love the fact that it is non-hormonal.

  • The only glitch I've had is very heavy periods. I take iron to keep up and it seems to help. I always want meat when AF is in town.

Then and now. How did my boy get so big?

  • I had it for 6 years before ds. I had a heavy flow which my OB explained was a normal flow I was just used to it being lighter from hormonal birth control. I will go back after this next one is born this summer. :)
  • I have had the Paraguard twice. Both times it was removed to get pregnant and I got pregnant within a month of both removals.

    Pros:
-didn't mess with my cycles so I could get pregnant shortly after removal
-no hormones so I was able to track ovulation while it was still inserted
    -no side effects from hormones

    Cons:
-heavier periods for the about 3 months after insertion.

***I didn't experience heavier periods post partum at all (inserted 8 weeks post partum). I did notice heavier periods the first time I had it inserted (prior to having kids).

  • I had paraguard for 9+ yrs, before switching to Mirena.  For me, I had heavier than normal bleeding which caused a slight anemia - but in all I had no problems.  I liked that I could track my cycles, unlike Mirena.  If I didnt' have the anemia issues, I would've stuck with paraguard.

  • I had my 1st paragaurd for a year before K was born it was great. I had no problems and loved it.

I got my 2nd after K was born and about 8mo after getting it my periods started getting longer and longer and they are were already heavy but started lasting around 3 weeks. One day when I went to check my strings and they were really low. I went to the doctor and found out it had started to fall out and imbedded itself in my cervix and my cervix. I had to have it removed and it took forever and was kind of painful.

    Oh no, that sounds terrible!

Thanks to all you ladies for sharing your experiences!

  • A little late, but I had my paraguard removed last month after having it in for 4 years.

When I first had it put in it took 4 tries (ouch!) mainly due to the fact that I had never been pregnant before.
I bled for 9 months straight after having it put in (also due to never having been preggo)
Then after that I had normal periods with 2 heavy days and some cramping, nothing awful.

About 1 year after insertion I began getting BV very often... pretty much constantly.  I've never had a yeast infection or BV before this. Nothing in my life was different as well.
I have dealt with almost constant BV for these past 3 years. I tried everything and finally concluded my last effort to get my body back on track would be to remove the paraguard.  My man and I are planning on getting married early next year and starting a family later next year, so BC beyond NFP was not really needed.
I'm happy to say after the removal, I did not get BV this month for the first time in years!! So happy.
Also my period seems to be lighter and less crampy.

Despite MY issues, I would still highly recommend paraguard.
