Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Thrush & Nipple Issues

My baby is 3 months old and I've been having issues since shortly after he was born.  I've been to see a lactation consultant several times and just recently went to the OB to have them prescribe some nipple cream and the medication used for yeast (can't remember the name).  It's been about 2 weeks and while I feel like it's gotten much better, I'm still having issues with thrush and nipple cracking on the left side (ironically the side that produces almost ALL of my milk).  I think the nipple cracking is due to a bad latch which had stemmed from having flat nipples(sometimes the latch is great, other times not so great).  I'm just wondering if anyone else has experienced this and what have you done?  I'm so frustrated by it all but I really don't want to stop nursing or have to resort to pumping all of the time.  I'm pumping now at work and exclusively breast feeding while I'm home or on weekends.

Re: Thrush & Nipple Issues

  • I don't know about the nipple cracking issue along with the thrush b/c my nipples crack early in my breastfeeding days and then heal.  I am dealing with thrush right now though.  What has seemed to help me was someone's suggestion of putting white vinegar solution on my nipples each time I feed and pump.  I was rx'd an oral drug and then LO has Nastatin for his mouth but really I felt like we finally stopped passing it back and forth when I started using the vinegar solution.  Make sure you change your nursing pads really often too.

  • I had thrush a few months ago.  I read a lot about it on le leche league website and Google.  Do the vinegar rinse after each feeding/pumping, avoid dairy and sugar.

  • For flat nipples, have you tried breast shells? You wear them between feedings and they help draw the nipple out a bit.

Thrush sucks. Make sure you are washing everything - your bras/tanks, etc. in hot water, and add a cup of vinegar to the wash. It's also a good idea to make a vinegar-water solution (1 T vinegar to 1 cup water) and rinse your nipples after feeding. Is the cream Dr. Newman's APNO? If not, I would recommend that and if you still can't kick it, some Diflucan. Mine finally went away with the Diflucan.
  • I finally got rid of thrush after almost 2-1/2 months, what finally worked for me was a 14 day dose of diflucan and LO was on nystatin. We actually had to repeat this twice. After every feeding vinegar rinses also in the wash. I also applied cococunt oil and all purpose nipple ointment to my nips. For 3-4 nights after the last feeding I applied cococunt oil and tea tree oil to my nips making sure to rinse them before the next feeding. I also took 6 garlic pills and aciphollicus pills a day and drank a cup of kefir too. So overwhelming but I finally kicked it! GL!
