confused by swim diapers... help!

I started a packing list for a our big trip to the Caribbean. It will be DD's first time in the water for a swim! I'm completely confused by the diaper situation. I had originally thought just to put a suit and rash guard over her usual disposable considering she'll really just be going in the water in short spurts (pun intended!).

Should I, instead, grab a package of disposable swim dipes? The problem is that DD is tiny (12.5 lbs) and the swim diapers I have found start at 16lbs - way too big! I am not interested in a reusable one this time around considering we won't have access to a washing machine for the week. Any thoughts??

  • Like ducky said, they do have smaller sizes. Hope you can find some. If not the medium should work in a pinch. :)

  • I didn't find the smaller size at target, but they were in buybuybaby.

  • We put DS in a small swim diaper when he was five months and it fit fine. He was a big baby though. Ditto PPs who said swim diapers just hold poop. We switch DS into a regular diaper when he is out of the water and we want him to stay dry. Have fun!

  • @Ducky719 and @ imoverit - So I checked ama.zon and the hug.gies and pamp.ers websites and hug.gies comes in size Small, but that fits 16-24 lbs. The smallest size that Pampers comes in is 3/4 but G is size 2. I'm guessing this is because babies aren't "supposed" to swim until they are 6 months, and most babies are well over 12 lbs at 6 months. *sigh* <tiny.baby.problems> :) I'll just get them and hope for the best, they are cheap enough.

I think the diapers you have found were size medium (starting at 16.5lbs) - do you have time to order any online?  You maybe able to get smalls.

So, someone told me that swim diapers do not hold pee in them...they are only intended to keep poopies from leaking out.  A regular diaper will just blow up and hold onto water so if LO poops...you get the picture (kids running out of the pool, screaming!)

If you are going in a pool, I'd look into ordering some online.  If just the ocean, then your call.  LO won't be in the water that much to justify putting them on.

This exactly! I had no idea and she peed all over her stroller on the way to the beach!

If you did end up with a reusable (for fit reasons) she will wear it for such a short time, you could probably just rinse it with her suit and let it dry.

DD uses a reusable dipe and she has never pooped in it, so I often just rinse after a swim.

  • My DD always poops in her swim diaper without fail. I have a reusable swim diaper with disposables as back ups.

  • I would still do a reusable one-- you can wash it out in the sink. It probably won't get that dirty. If you do have your lo in a swim diaper of any kind, just be aware that you or your lounge chair can be peed on.

  • Swim diapers definitely wont fit her. DS just this year could fit the size 1. So I would just do a suit with the reusable swim diaper as well.

Both my DDs were tiny, and I had DS and DD#1 in swimming class when she was 6 months (I think she was about 13 lbs or so...).  I only bought one pack of diapers for both of them (DS was just over 18 months), so I can only assume she was in a much bigger size than what fit her.  She was fine!  I would bring a pack, just in case.  It is a pain having a baby with a GIANT bottom when it is full of water!
