Possible blighted ovum

Hello all! I am really hoping someone can give me some helpful info. I am currently 5 weeks 1 day pregnant with my first pregnancy. Dr. has been monitoring my beta HCG due to cramping and very light spotting. 1st beta was 742, 48 hrs later 2100, then 3 days later 8200. I went to the ER this weekend for spotting and they did a vaginal ultrasound. At that time I was exactly 5 weeks with a beta of 8200. The U/S tech showed me the gestational sac that measured exactly 5 weeks. She said it was implanted correctly and didn't seem concerned. 2 hrs later the ER Dr. came in to tell me I had a blighted ovum because with my HCG levels over 8000 they should have seen more in the sac. I am terrified. I saw my OB this AM and am ordered for another HCG tomorrow and an ultrasound in 4 days. Is it normal to not see a yolk sac when your HCG is over 8000?

My early HCG was like 15,000 and the U/S showed only the sac, the ER Dr told me it was a blighted ovum. I went to the MFM 1 week later and there was the hb at 157, Before thinking worse case go to your OB they are way more knowledgeable then the ER dr. I hope all is well and you have a HB at your next appointment

@haleitschuh I posted a few weeks earlier. The EXACT same situation happened to me. I was 5 weeks, about same HCG level, ER doctor saw the sac with nothing in it and I received the same diagnosis. Five weeks is just too early in most cases. I'm not ruling out blighted ovum BUT I waited it out a few days and at 6 weeks I saw a little one with a HB. My HCG levels had the same progression, but it was also because I had two other sacs that never formed. Anywho, give it more time. Update us!

This is why they shouldn't do scans before 7 weeks. Its completely pointless and just causes unnecessary stress. I say hold tight until you have another scan. It's unlikely you'll see much at 5 wks anyway, as there's simply not much to see.

I had a BO with my last pregnancy, but it was found at almost 13 weeks. The sac had stopped growing at 6wks 6d. However, it hasn't stopped me conceiving again. We caught this LO on my 3rd cycle afterwards and saw a healthy little jelly bean in there at 7wks 2 days. Hoping to have another good scan next week, then we can announce!

I had an ultrasound at 5w2d and could only see the sac and yolk sac. I'm now 8w5d and have had two more and there is def a growing baby in there. I would not base anything solely off of beta levels. Every one is different and there is such a wide range. Mine seemed low compared to everyone else's that I read about. But mine progressed normally for me. I've read so many times it's not accurate to go just off of them. My ultrasound tech also told me, if the ultrasound looks good, don't worry about the levels.

Update: Dr. called today and said my HCG levels didn't even come close to doubling. Another U/S on Thursday and another HCG level Thursday. If they don't see anything on the u/s they would like to do a D & C on Friday.

So unsure what to do!

I had a BO in July, so I feel your pain. The uncertainty is really hard! You are still really early - why would they rush to do a D&C? I passed mine naturally, without surgery and the associated risks. Make sure they aren't pushing you to get a procedure done ($$$) before you are sure you really need it.

Hoping for the best for you. I experienced a blighted ovum with my first pregnancy but was diagnosed when I was around 9 weeks and had my D&C the next week. However, at 9 weeks there should have been a fetal pole and there was not. 5 weeks is different. Did your doctor give you the beta numbers? He said they didn't double but did he tell you what they were? I wouldn't make a decision now. Wait and see what the next blood draw and u/s show. And then go from there.

My hcg levels were at 24,000 and they only saw a gestational sac... They told me it wasn't a viable pregnancy... I went and got a second opinion and they were shocked they gave that prognosis so early (I was between 5-6 wks along)... They did an u/s and found a tiny tiny baby with a heartbeat ... I'm almost 10 weeks now and everything is going well (knock on wood)... My advice is to wait it out... It's way too early and the next few weeks should be telling for you!! I definitely wouldn't rush to do a d&c... My first doctor suggested the same thing and I can't imagine now if I had trusted her and gone along with it... Good luck!!

UPDATE: So I had another ultrasound today. I am 5 weeks 3 days. This time they saw the yolk sac clear as day. The U/S tech told me that for being 5 weeks 3 days this is all she should see. The gestational sac was measuring 6 weeks 2 days though. I went to see the dr after the u/s and the dr did not seem optimistic. He said that we should have seen a fetal pole by now. I am scheduled for another u/s in 1 week. I thought you didn't see a fetal pole until like 6 1/2 weeks? I am now playing the waiting game! UGH!

I know how u feel. I keep getting the same... Cept at 5w5d the ER seen the fetal pole and all... Then I go to my ob and now I keep measuring 6w... He told me it could be a blighted ovum but it's too early to tell... I wish u luck girl!! T&P your way!!

Update: Thank you to everyone who has commented and left your support and prayers! Today I went in for a follow up ultrasound, I am 6 weeks 3 days. We were able to see and HEAR the heartbeat of our precious LO! The baby even measured 6 weeks 6 days and right now everything looks great! Praying for continued health and strength.
