Low amniotic fluid? (XP to PgAL)

Yesterday I had a growth sono to check baby's size and position. Baby is frank breech :-( and the tech said my amniotic fluid is low, and asked if I'd had a NST recently (I haven't). She let the doctor know (I don't have an appointment with the doctor until Thursday - they schedule scans and appointments separately), and the doctor said to have a repeat scan on Thursday before the appointment, but didn't want to see me. The nurse said to monitor baby's movements and to call if anything changed.

I'm assuming that if they didn't want to see me/do an NST yesterday, the fluid levels were not so low as to be worrisome? Now of course I'm freaked out about that, in addition to the prospect of a c-section. I hope they can try a version, but I'm concerned that they won't if the fluid levels are still low on Thursday.

Does anyone have experience with this? (I'm 36w2d for those on mobile)

Re: Low amniotic fluid? (XP to PgAL)

  • No experience exactly but I do get weekly scans with a MFM appointment right after. My understanding is that if they were very concerned they would want to have an appointment and a scan sooner than it is now scheduled. However, it can't hurt for you to call and ask the office this. You can even ask for a call back from the doc and ask how low was the fluid? What are the implications? Should I be worried?

Sorry they didn't give you much info, just enough to scare you. Totally sucks. Hope goes well.

  • I am not quite 35 weeks and have low fluid. I have NST and US twice a week. Did they tell you what your fluid level was. Once it is under 5 cm they get worried. I am on restricted activity ( for contractions) and was told increasing my fluid intake may help. Drink lots of water and rest if you can.
  • I was induced with ds1 due to low amniotic fluid. Did they give you a number? Mine was at a 3 and sent be directly to the hospital from Ultrasound office. If it was too low they would send you right in. Its probably at a leVel where they need to watch it
  • I have twice weekly BPP's done and my fluid level changes all the time. My fluid is usually around 17cm but a few times my fluid dropped to about 11cm because I was doing too much and not drinking enough. My dr told me that 11 is borderline low but not too low to do anything about it yet. I was told to take it easy and drink plenty of fluids. The next week my fluid was back up. So it may not be too bad where immediate intervention is needed but try to take it easy and drink lots of water.
  • Mine is lower than I would like (6.9) but the doctor isn't worried until it gets below 5, so I'm trying to just trust that they know what they're talking about, which I'm sure they do. I hate that yours didn't give you very much info. Good luck, positive thoughts!
  • I agree with pp's, drink plenty of water and relax.  They typically will send you to L&D for monitoring if the levels are low enough for serious concern.  I would, however, call my DR to see if they will tell you what the levels were and at what point they would need to take action.

    Hope all is well!
  • Thanks all... I did end up calling the doctor to find out what the levels were, and as soon as the nurse heard it was me, she said that she was about to call me because they want to move the repeat sono up to tomorrow. The fluid yesterday was 5.6, and 5 is the level where they get concerned. She said to call if there's any change in the baby's movements... so of course now I'm super paranoid and poking at poor LO constantly. Baby was moving a ton last night but not so much this morning. Although night time is usually the most active time anyway. :-/
