This is the one I got, based on it being highly recommended from my sister who is a mother of 2
I have this and I may be an idiot, but I have never been able to get it to give me an accurate reading. I even asked my doctor about it. I just do the temp under the arm pit or if I know LO has a really high fever I take it rectally.
We just took the free ones they gave us in the hospital. They're just standard digi thermometers. We take LO's temp in the armpit, if it's high (or low) we do a rectal for a really accurate reading before we call the pedi.
I've always used the free one the hospital gave us. I've tried others and they never gave accurate readings. Rectal temps are what your pediatricians office will ask you for anyway so you may as well use that type.

My sister took hers to the Dr with her and compared it to the reading he got, it was accurate for her
From my years as a nanny, plain old digital thermometers that can be used rectally are the most reliable. I hate taking temps that way, but in my xp it is the best, most accurate way. Save some cash and get a few of these. You'll have peace of mind too!
Someone got us the Exergen temporal scanner and I tried it on DH and myself. My temps taken almost back to back were 98.5 (probably accurate) and 102.1-- so I don't trust it at all.
We also have a quick read digital one that we will use rectally (I think ours is Vick's brand also).
I tried a bunch and the hospital one was still the best. Now that my others are older I have a forehead scanner but I don't think it's super accurate so I wouldn't use it on a newborn.
I used the digi one the hospital gave us when DD1 was born 9 years ago. I've always used it in infant's armpits. I've never been asked for or taken a rectal reading. I don't think either of them have ever had a particularly high armpit reading so maybe that's why.

I've heard that rectal thermometers are the way to go for infants, they are the most accurate.
We have this one and it was very easy to use.
Now that DD is older, I plan on getting the temporal one that the pp linked.
