MFM?

Hi everyone, How does having an MFM work? When do you start seeing them? How often? Is it necessary? I'm 7 weeks with twins and transfer to my OB from RE in a few weeks, so I haven't been able to ask yet. I just keep seeing it mentioned on this board. Thanks!

Re: MFM?

  • I only see an MFM not an ob/gyn. She delivers so there's no reason for me to have double appointments with both.

D & L are here at 34 weeks 4 days by vaginal and breech delivery on 11/19/2013
Two healthy boys weighing 4 lbs 15 ozs and 4 lbs 5 ozs.  Only 6 days in the NICU and getting bigger, stronger and cuter every day!

  • I have di/di twins and am currently 20w. I alternate seeing my OB and my MFM every 2w. I didn't see MFM til 16w.
  • I am having di/di twins and started seeing the MFM at 20 weeks. I don't think it's always automatic for twin pregnancies to require an MFM, but in my case the OB I am seeing doesn't have a ton of experience with twins, and the hospital she works at doesn't have a NICU or even a high risk nursery. It was my OB's recommendation that I go to the MFM, and good thing too...because it turns out one of my girls is IUGR and is having cord flow problems.
TTC since June, 2011 with anovulatory PCOS, 1 blocked tube, and mild MFI
    3rd cycles clomid + Ovidrel = BFN
    4th cycles letrozole/Ovidrel + IUI = BFN
    IVF #1 = BFP! Twins due 2/5/2014

  • I saw her for a level 2 u/s at 18 weeks.  They found some minor things they wanted to monitor so I saw her in conjunction with my regular OB for my entire pregnancy.

  • eta:  my ob office requires an u/s at 18 weeks with the MFM for twin pregnancies... I think had everything been great I would have only seen the MFM once or twice more.

  • I didn't have an MFM. I kind of wish I did though. I think my u/s tech misdiagnosed my twin type. She told me di/di but I'm positive (and so are most of the ladies on this board) my girls were mo/di. I should have had closer monitoring because I'm pretty sure my girls developed TTTS towards the end of my pregnancy.

  • I started seeing my MFM at 18 weeks when my OB sent me for my anatomy scan. I've seen him every 3-4 weeks since. I still see my regular OB once a month (now every two weeks). My OB will deliver my gurls when MFM gives the OK.

  • I have di/di twins and started seeing the MFM at 10 weeks. I saw them as frequently as the OB.
