Induction this week!

So I've made it to the 37 week mark with a diagnosis of choleostasis. Off to the hospital Wednesday to start induction. Frantic weekend of getting things ready at the house. We thought we'd have a few more weeks at least. I'm feeling: Nervous. Excited. Terrified (first time mom here) and I just can't wait to meet our little girl! This site has been awesome for laughs and info, comraderie and venting. Thank you ladies. Any tips for things to expect During induction for a first time pregnancy from those who have been through it?

Re: Induction this week!

  • Bring a ton of entertainment for you and your DH, (favorite movies, etc.) these things could take 12-24hours.

With DS I was very nervous/anxious...but then by the 4th hour I was over it. Try to delay the epi (if you can), so you could get up and walk around the halls, because once that epi is in, you are in bed until the baby comes (at least it was that way for us).

    GL!!!

  • I was induced with DD and it wasn't bad at all.  I know a lot of people say that inductions can take a long time, but there are some that do not.  They started me on the pit. ( I was not dilated AT ALL) at 6 am and DD was delivered at 2:38 pm.  They broke my water around 11am and I went very quickly from 4cm to 10 cm.  I was told that being induced makes the contractions stronger and I ended up without an EPI. I however, was not allowed to walk as PP suggested due to them having to monitor baby constantly due to all the issues I had during pregnancy.  They would not allow me off the monitors.  Hope this helps and good luck!!!
  • Thank you for posting this, and the responses, I have been reading up myself but until I was closer to my induction was waiting to ask.
  • I was induced with my first.. They put the gel on my cervix around 5pm (I was barely even dilated), normally they'd do that and send you home, but it kicked me into labor enough so I couldn't leave. At 7:45am they started the pitocin.. I still wasn't very dilated, maybe 1cm? After over an hour of pushing I had my DS around 3pm.
  • Never been induced but best of luck to you!
  • Never been induced, but wanted to wish u a fast and safe delivery
  • I was induced with both DD and DS. Be prepared for a long wait - it was 40 hours with DD and 48 with DS before I started pushing. I wasn't allowed out of bed at all because they constantly monitored the baby. Good luck and t&p's your way.

  • I was induced for medical reasons but was already 3 cm dilated when I went in. I tried natural but with the pitocin the contractions were unbearable so I delayed the epi as long as I could and got it around 7 cm. Went in at 6am and had her by 12pm. Wasn't too long of an induction for me but do bring something for yall to do/read just in case. Good luck.
  • Never induced but good luck!! Hope everything goes safely and smoothly!
  • Good luck!

  • I agree with what others have said. Bring a cozy pillow for you and DH, and some entertainment distractions, and hold off on the epi as long as you can.

I was induced because of high blood pressure the day before the due date, and my body wasn't ready. I had family in and out of the room, which helped pass the time...but it was also tiring. I walked as much as I could and bounced on a ball to help. I started around 5pm on a Thursday and ended up in a c-section on Friday close to midnight into Saturday.

Of course, everyone's different. I hope your induction is quicker and smooth. There is a light at the end of the tunnel. GL!

  • Thanks all! The reality of this is finally settling in. I appreciate all the tips and good wishes!
  • I agree to bring a lot of entertainment from your favorite music playlist to movies or shows. I was induced and they did delay the epi for about 2 hours. That said after 20 hours of labor I ended up with a c-section. As previous posters mentioned it can be a different experience for everyone. I was bummed about needing a c-section at the time, but ended up with a perfect healthy baby. At the end of the day that is all that matters so my advice is to keep an open mind and hopefully you will be one of the lucky ones with a quick delivery after induction! :)
  • Just want to wish good luck, and T & Ps for a safe and smooth deliver.  :)

  • I was in labor at the hospital for over 24 hours. This may or may not be the case for you, but just make sure you bring things to keep you busy. Good luck to you. I hope you have a safe and quick delivery.
