still in pain :(

recap: 33 weeks 2days
Went to L&D yesterday due to bleeding and cramps.
They took a urine sample, no UTI. I was contracting but not regularly so they said it could've been a number of things including dehydration or sperm from intercourse the previous day. Either way it still doesn't make sense to me but they monitored LO and said she looked really good so I got sent home.

Up until now I'm still in pain (nothing major but still uncomfortable) and STILL bleeding. Which they said would be normal since I got examined but it's been more than 24 hours and now I'm worried again....
I don't understand why this is happening to me and how it could be normal....this is my second pregnancy and I've never had this happen. I have an appointment with my dr on Wednesday but I don't know if I should wait til then or call and see what they say again.

Anyone have any experience with this? Thoughts/comments appreciated. Thanks!

Re: still in pain :(

  • I had bleeding and cramps off and on my entire pregnancy last time but we knew it was because part of the placenta tore away early on in the pregnancy.  Even though it got to be "normal" for the pregnancy I still worried every single time.  I'm sorry you're experiencing that.

I would guess this late in the pregnancy that its probably just an irritated cervix.  It never hurts to call for reassurance though!

Sperm contains prostaglandins, which ripen the cervix, so that's why "they" say sex can induce labour.

There actually aren't any conclusive studies on it, and the ones that are out there pretty much say "Well, yes, it could be sperm, or oxytocin from an orgasm, or this, or that..." Bottom line is most sources don't believe sperm contains prostaglandins in any significant concentration to make a difference, but that doesn't stop people from saying it.

Sorry, OP, didn't mean to hijack -- can you talk to your OB or consultant directly rather than just L&D?

  • So sorry you are in pain! I would definitely call your doctor if you're needing some reassurance! GL!
  • Sorry you are still in pain, and unsure of cause of bleeding has got to cause stress, which you don't need any more of. My midwives have told me all along to call if anything doesn't feel right, that's what they are there for. Either for reassurance that it's ok and normal, or to come in and get checked out, either way, if you are still uncomfortable, I'd for sure call your OB. Good luck!
