Babies on the Brain

Hi All - New Here!

Hi everyone- just thought I'd say hello and try to get some advice from fellow moms-to-be! My husband and I are seriously wanting to start a family but naturally I'm so nervous! My only concern: My schooling has a wait list and if I waited until I was completely finished to start TTC I would be 30ish before I started. No offense to anyone I just really want to start at this age (25 & 26) and time. Help! What would you do!?

Re: Hi All - New Here!

  • I would talk it over with my husband and not a bunch of internet crazies who have no idea what my life is like.

  • I've spent 2.5 years doing undergrad work for nursing and am on the wait list to do my clinical work which will take 1.5 - 2 years, but will be a small workload since I've already completed everything else. Iam currently working. I want a few children and always have wanted to start in my mid-late twenties. I guess I'm just mentally ready and it is eating at me because if it weren't for this schooling situation I'd already be trying.

  • There's too many variables. Is there someone who's been through the program before and could give you advice? Friends of mine who have been through nursing school, the clinical piece was no "small workload", and involved crazy hours. I don't know if this may not be the same with your program, but do consider it. What would you do with your child during that time? I do think its possible to go through school while pregnant/having a child, but it's NOT easy, and it would be MUCH easier without a child. If you do go that route, have a good plan for child care while you need to spend time focusing on school and your clinical work.

Also, would you continue working while in school and having a baby (because that sounds crazy to me), or do you have the finances to cover the time not working?

  • I am 33 and just started trying. Have been with my DH for almost 10 years. You have plenty of time. Other goals could be to concentrate on saving money, buying a home, and traveling before having the family :)

I would go to twoweekwait.com instead of here. These ladies are kinda mean.
  • I will also say that I am 26 and have two toddlers. I am a stay at home mom so idk what ur goin through but it never hurts to start trying because you never know how long it will take. It will happen in Gods time anyway.
  • I don't know what school you are going to, but there was no part of my nursing education that had a small work load. Clinicals were full nursing shifts, writing papers on case studies, studying medications and treatments, and learning procedures, etc... I would not have wanted to be pregnant during that, but only you can decide when the time is right.

  • Oh no....I hope what I commented was not mean :)  You sound like you've accomplished a lot already and you and your DH are really excited to have a family.  I am sure you will make it work however things would pan out for you....always does :)  GL and just do what your heart tells you!
  • Enjoy your life and if you both want to start a family I say go for it; although a lot of work on your hands but a beautiful outcome will keep you in good spirits. Good luck with school and I am sure you will be able to handle it. :)>-
  • I didn't think care bear was mean I thought marines wifey was
  • Well glad I was not :) whew!
  • Girl, I can relate!!  I am living it right now.  I decided to get my Masters as a Speech Path.  (A 3 year journey when all said and done.)  I went back and forth between trying and waiting knowing it would be a while.
For us, this career sets us up for security in the future.  Yes, I have to wait but we see it as an INVESTMENT that allows me to be the part-time working mom I'd like to be rather than putting in the time so we have a savings/can afford to go on a vacation every once in a while.  You have to ask yourself the honest questions:
-How intense is your program? What are the time commitments?
-Is is really worth it for you to go to school?
-If you started trying, would you be willing to go back AFTER having a child?

There are a handful of gals in my program that have kiddos.  It's not easy but they make it work.  Check out your options...how flexible is the program? Can you do part-time?  I believe everything happens for a reason.  We spent a lot of time in prayer and the doors continually opened up for school.  It was the answer we needed.
Is it easier to get through school without kiddos?  Yes!  Can you make it work balancing school and a family?  Absolutely.  From a gal currently in an intense program, I am SO glad we waited so I can put my energy into my program and marriage...highly suggest it.  For me, three years in the grand scheme of things is NOTHING compared to the benefits we will reap by putting the time in now.  Either way you choose, you will make it work =)
  • You are all great thank u so much for all the thoughts!! No- it won't be a small load I just meant I have all of my other classes complete. We have a home and are ok financially so I'm thinking we can work it out... just hoping to make the right choice!! Scary!
