Parenting after a Loss

Car seat- one more question

Sorry ladies! I have an almost 5 yr old so I think I know but I can't find it for certain online. Is it a recommendation to be rear facing for 2 yrs of is it the law? DD will be 1 in two weeks. She's just over. 20lbs. They didn't do her height at the last visit.

I'm reading required online but then I'm hearing recommendation. I just want to do the right thing and if she's forward facing her seat would probably fit in my car. But I want to be safe.

I think law is one year AND 20 pounds but the AAP and NHSA strongly recommend at least two and up to 4 if possible. We are buying convertible car seats that can RF until 3 or 4.

A 1 year old's spine is nowhere near fused and they can be severely injured in a car accident if forward facing. Check out the FB page called Car Seats for the Littles. I learned so much!

eta: If your car seat won't fit in your car the car seat techs on Car Seats for the Littles will help you find the perfect car seat for your car.

  • See that's what I thought. We got a convertable. I mean they are all big no matter what one you go with. Just wanted to make sure I was interpreting correctly.

This...the law is behind the times in terms of safety. You want to keep LO RF as long as possible, ideally until Lo outgrows the RF limits of the carseat (which should RF until at least 40lbs for a good convertible; most kids outgrow the height before the weight).

You would be AMAZED how many people around here turn their babies at 1 though. Google internal decapitation for more info on why it's not a good idea.

  • Like PPs said, until 2 is the recommendation.  And it has nothing to do with LO's size--it is about bone density.
