If you make your own baby food...

What foods are you making for your LO? We started oatmeal at 4 months, and DDs 6 mo appt is tomorrow. I'm sure he'll give us the okay to start veggies and fruits. I picked up avocado, sweet potato, bananas, and prunes yesterday so I could make it today to freeze and be ready. Also, we are going OOT this week. We have a 3-4 drive one way. I know there is no way her frozen solid food will stay frozen so I was just going to make it when she needed it by mashing up banana or avocado. What will do when you travel? Make it on the go or use jarred food?

Re: If you make your own baby food...

  • We did a little of both. I packed jars, but if we were at a restaurant, I would order apple sauce or bananas to mash. When he got a little older, mashed potatoes were a good option too.

  • Applesauce is my favorite travel baby food. Any of the jarred fruit and veggie baby foods seem to be pretty standard. My older DS refused to eat any of the jarred baby food with meat.

We did first feeding from jars. We did 3 days if each food. I read not to stress about making first foods cause what if you make a big batch and LO doesn't like or is allergic. We actually did have a pretty bad rash reaction to sweet potato.

FWIW we started with green veggies then orange. Fruits we are doing as we eat them cause we can just mash a spoonful up.

I just made my first batch this weekend of green beans and carrots.

  • We made a batch of avocados and DS did not like them one bit. After a couple times of trying we just discarded them. I moved to jarred food to figure out what he would like before making any more.

Thus far he likes green beans, carrots, peas, and squash. We have tried several fruits and have not found one that he likes. I just went to the grocery store this AM and bought fresh veggies that he likes and will now purée them for him.
  • I've made zucchini, sweet potato, pears, avocado and banana. Next will be apples, carrots and butternut squash.
With DS I traveled with his frozen food using a cooler and ice packs. I think with DD I'll just use jarred food for traveling, depending on where we are going (my parents' house vs a hotel).

  • I made pears, peas, zucchini, squash, avocado, and banana. Brayden hates the peas and zucchini. The furthest place we traveled was an hour away and all I did was take a whole avocado and mash it at our destination

  • At this point, solid food is such a small part of her intake that I'd just skip it if we went on a trip. Too much hassle, too much mess!
  • LO has tried a variety of solids but it's been touch and go with both homemade and jarred foods. Our freezer is pretty well stocked of different homemade foods in the hopes that she will get into it soon. At this point if we were just going on a short trip OOT, I wouldn't even bother. But if she were more into it or we were going away for a good while, I would probably bring store bought pouches of organic food.

  • So far I've made sweet potatoes and squash. Next up is avocado.

  • So far we have done oatmeal avocado butternut squash and apple
Sauce. She hated the apple sauce! I was really surprised.
We are taking a long trip before thanksgiving and I think I'll just take store bought stuff.
I really enjoy cooking and have found it easy to make the baby food but if I didn't have time then she either gets just oatmeal or store bought.
Next on the list is acorn squash (it was a better price then yams)

  • I"ve made a lot of stuff and frozen it in ice cube trays (sweet potato, squash, sweet peas, beets, carrots, apples, pears, banana)... but we also use the pouches when on the go.  Avocado is a great food for travel because it is safely stored in its own natural container :-)  But if you just put the frozen cubes in a covered container it will defrost and you can use it on the road.

  • Can u ladies share the recipes you uses to make those foods? Or are you keeping them 100% plain for the babies first exposure to the food?

If you can recommend a website, I would appreciate it

@JSS1002 How does frozen avocado turn out when it defrosts?  Is it still good?  Brown?

Still great, no brown. It Defrosts fast, but after an hour or two or defrosting it then starts to turn brown.

  • I have fed him (fresh):
    -Avocado
    -Peas
    -Green beans
    -Squash
    -Carrots
    -Sweet potato
    -Apples
    -Cantaloupe
    -Banana
    -Peaches
-Smooshed up inside of a seedless grape

    From jar:
    -most of the above
    -mixed fruit including blueberry
    -mixed veggies including spinach

I do a two day wait on very low - low risk allergy foods, three days if there is a mid-high risk. Also, I do not feed him daily yet.

If I was travelling, I'd take jars and/or bananas. A lot easier to use.

@CanukMamhttps://wholesomebabyfood.momtastic.com/ I do not use any spices yet, but I will in a few months.

    100% plain!
Yep, the only thing I added was water to help thin out the puree.

  • I made all of the food for DS when he was a baby. We did sweet potatoes first, then green beans & peas. I did a few veggies before moving to fruits. He never liked green beans or avacado.

For DD, I've made cantaloupe, pears and a small batch of carrots. Only because we had extra in our CSA basket. I started giving her carrots last night. After that I'll try avacado.

The only thing I don't plan to make is applesauce. It is way too much work for so little reward.

I made applesauce in the crockpot. Peal, chop, a little water and cinnamon. Set low over night (8hours). The house smelled so yummy! I thought it was pretty easy. Well after the pealing...

@24ladybug When I make mine I don't peel them. The apple just comes right off the peels and I pick them out. Lol. I find it's less work than peeling them.
