Relieved and Saddened-Telling Work

I told my work today I wouldnt be coming back after baby. It was incredibly tough, we have been going back and forth for months on me working or being a SAHM. We finally decided to take the plunge with the full intent if I just cant hack it or we're broke I will go back to work.

I thought about just not going back after baby, taking my leave and then telling them I had a change of heart but figured that would be pretty tacky since they would have such short notice to fill my spot. They were upset but did tell me I would always have a spot if I wanted to come back, made me happy.

Is there anyone else not going back that has told their employer, or are not telling yet/at all? I hope it goes well for you!!

  • Good for you, and congrats on becoming a SAHM! It's the best job in the world :)

It's great that you gave them plenty of notice and they will re-hire you if you do decide to go back to work at some point. It's never a good idea to burn any bridges.

  • Good for you for the way that you handled the situation.  I always find it tough to let an employer know that I'm leaving.  Congrats on becoming a SAHP.  It can be really fun!!  I hope you enjoy it, and I hope you and DH can find a balance that works well for your family!! :)

As for how I left...  Well, I had every intention of going back just a few short weeks after I had my DS1.  Unfortunately, he was born very unhealthy, and required surgery and months of treatments in the NICU.  I told my employer as soon as I had an idea as to what extent my son's birth defect would affect his first year.  I didn't tell them WHY I wasn't coming back, only that I wasn't.  I found out later that my CEO had been bashing me, and telling my associates that, "This is why you don't want women in the workplace."  It was the right decision for us, and although it sucked professionally, I don't regret it.  I feel strongly that appropriate notice should be given, but there are always circumstances that don't really allow for it.  :(

  • Congrats it's the best decision you could've made. Being a SAHM and working mom are both super tough jobs and come with their pros and cons. I just love being spending time with DS and our bond. It's not a glamorous job, but it's such a rewarding job. I figure I have a lifetime to work, but they are only small once. If you can afford to do it, you'll never regret it. Good for you on telling them now. You can enjoy your time with your LO even more. I went back to work for 3 months after my maternity leave and it was so tough!! Congrats!

  • I am going to be a SAHM also. I informed my work well in advance that I wasn't going to be coming back and they were super supportive of it! I'm so glad that your work is being so good about it. :) it's really great that you have the opportunity, because not every mom who wants to be a SAHM gets to, so good for you!
