IMO, no. We have a cheap diaper pail from BRU that takes regular garbage bags and it works fine. I think the cost of the bags is where they really get you. I have heard that Walmart has generic diaper genie bags, but I don't know how much cheaper they are. Maybe get it if you really want it and plan on having more kids where you'll get more use out of it.
We had the diaper genie given to us a baby shower gift. It also came with some bag refills. We stopped using it as soon as we ran out- the bags are SO expensive!
We have a trashcan with a lid in the hall outside her room- pee diapers go in there. Poop diapers go outside into the trash can. Trash comes 2x a week so we just take out the pee ones every Monday and Thursday..
I love our Diaper Genie. Nothing else keeps the smell in. We buy whatever bags are cheapest/on sale, Cartwheel usually has them 10% off or so, but target also has an up & up bag that fits. Walmart has an off-brand too that is a few dollars less. I've never had a problem with it filling up too fast or tearing off or anything like that.
Ours broke a couple months ago so we use a regular trash can for the wet diapers and take #2 out to the trash right away. The bigger they get the more room they take up in the bags and you use them up way too fast.
I have the Munchkin one and love it. Still use it. It does a great job of not letting the smell spread. Not a necessity at this point, maybe.. but very convenient!
I don't really like our diaper genie anymore. It was fine for breast milk poops that didn't really stink, but now the thing always reeks! The horrid smell comes out whenever you open it and it makes me gag. I also have the complaint of others that the skinny little bags fill up so quickly...I think I take a bag out to the trash every other day at this point with size 5 diapers. I think some other brands are more effective at keeping the smell in. I would go buy something else, but LO is starting to go on the potty already, so I don't want to waste the money in hopes he might be potty trained soon. I'll probably just grit my teeth and use it for our LO due in Feb.

This. And to try and cut some $ I only put the poop diapers in there. I just toss the ones with pee in a regular trash and change that every couple of days. I've been using it for almost two years now and I've only had to buy refills a few times. They really do a great job of keeping the smell under control. Sometimes though, we do have to tap the container that holds the baking soda to unplug the little hole. Small issue.
I actually bought one for DS around that time but that was also shortly before we planned to try for #2 so I knew it would be used for a long time. I love the Diaper Genie. It keeps out smells really well and I only throw poopy diapers in there so we rarely have to buy refills for it.
